I still don't know how 'The Cramps' got to play a live gig in an actual Asylum in front of an audience of actual mental patients, but they did. Here's the proof.

I thought this short was simply amazing. My favorite moment is when the big, hulking black guy in the cowboy hat rushes on stage to hug Lux Interior while he's in the middle of singing "Love Me."

"We're all part Shatner/And part James Dean/Part Warren Oates/And Steven McQueen"

...and Lux hugs him back. Can you imagine any other band doing a gig like that ?
I'd love to know how it came about.

I'm really amazed that this concert even happened. Napa State Hospital is a notoriously dangerous place with violent criminals. A staff member was just killed there this weekend, and a resident (not a Resident) is in custody.

I'd love to know the story of how it came about, but I can't find any info. I'm surprised Lux lived as long as he did!

It's one of those great mysteries of life, I guess. Maybe someone at the Napa hospital had some connections with the band?

And yes, Lux Interior was a true visionary who held up for longer than you'd expect. I'm sad he's no longer with us, but what a legacy he left. I wish there were anyone half as brilliant on the scene today.
