Why do all the critics say...

Why does everyone say the movie is so bad?? I thought it was a beautiful movie, and considering this is their first movie, Ranbir and Sonam did an AMAZING job. I absolutely loved the movie...it even made me cry in the end. AWESOME MOVIE!!! Must see!

i know. i dont know why the critics hated it. it is a beautiful and innovative film.

Bump!!!!

To be honest, it's not just the critics, but also the general audience who hasn't liked it. I guess SLB has set such a high standard for himself that this film must have left some people disappointed.

reply

ha! i cried in the end too!! and i really don't understand why people don't like it so much. to each one's own i guess.
SO buying the DVD. must re-live the magic for years and years to come!

i think people didnt really like it because its not a masala movie. i think the review from plantbollwood best fits the movie.

he film is spellbinding, heartwarming, and yes, heartbreaking as well. IS IT HIS BEST FILM? NO, IT'S NOT SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI'S BEST FILM. It is; however on par with his previous movies and will not disappoint his fans. The only thing that might go against it having mass appeal is that the movie is truly like a classical painting, in that THE VIEWER HAS TO OPEN THEIR MIND AND HAVE THE PATIENCE TO APPRECIATE TRUE BEAUTY . I highly recommend that you see the movie in a movie theater to appreciate the beautiful direction, backgrounds, and fine nuanced performances. “Saawariya” is a film that will prompt discussion, will be appreciated as a classic and will be one of those movies that will get better upon repeated viewings.

true say!!

apart from its less fine points, the movie was heartwarming and heartbreaking. finally something that stirred my emotions and didn't have me feeling like it was cheese coming out of my ears.

Oh I certainly agree with the comments here, it was a beautifully done movie almost like a Shakespeare in Love type....its a theatrical setting put together on the silver screen. And since I am a stringent critic, I think the movie was a home run all the way. My rule of thumb is that i don't watch any new actors because they simply cant act and make the movie unbearable to watch, BUT the rookie Kapoor's were amazing. They acted like seasoned actors, especially Sonam (I think she could be the Kajol of this era), the Direction was just SLB perfect and even with the simple story line the plot was very elegantly and intricately developed (except the quick ending). And lastly yes I think its best if you watch this movie in a theater to be able to see all the intricate details of the set and etc....truly this movie in the theaters was an EXPERIENCE.

And lastly if the movie had a better ending or a more developed ending, I would say that this perhaps could have been the best Indian Movie i have ever seen...but still i think its second to SLB's Devdas!!!!

Enjoy!

worst movie ever!

its cuz the critics aren't truly reviewing it with OPEN minds......i mean its the least we can expect them to do considering they r CRITICS....but alas they DONT.....mee i lubed the movie

I hate seeing bad reviews for Saawariya everywhere I go. It was a good movie for newcomers. I though Ranbir was great!! The sets were GORGEOUS and the songs were amazing! I also cried in the end. It's something different and those stupid critics can say what they want. I've loved Black and Devdas and I loved Saawariya.

reply

AMEN!!

reply

sorry, i thought it sucked. the dialogue was stupid. and the sets were not believable. The scenes could have been so much better, accompanied by better acting on the Kapoors' parts.

reply

I doubt the primary focus of the movie was to make realistic sets. Its set in a fictional town, so its made in a way so as to portray a certain mood for the entire film. Acting can't really be blamed, obviously these are new actors.

reply

lolz why are you sorry?? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I am just upset that people make baseless claims, but since you defended why you didn't like it, good for you!

reply

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's last good movie was HDDCS.

Everything after that has become self-indulgent "Oh look what a great director I am".

If he had made Saawariya, with more characters, characterisation, basic realistic backdrop (rather than cheap theatrical set-up) this movie perhaps would have had half a chance.

The fact that SLB himself lacked confidence in the final result is proven because of his interviews, insistence on OSO having a delayed release date and the casting of Rani and Salman to rescue it just in case.

SLB has a great vision - no doubt about it - but a greater ego. He has lost his touch of genuine film making.

Of course there will ALWAYS be a very tiny minority who will insist this is the best movie ever.... Thats why such directors are still in the business.

I thought it was a beautiful set. The content was a little light.

The lead actor annoyed the heck out of me, but I think I'm starting to warm up to Salman Khan.

I've seen it and Om Shanti Om, and I definitely prefer the latter.

reply

I think it's because of the ending. Indian audiences (and, well, everyone else, too, I guess) like happy formulaic endings.

reply

I agree so much with you NeetaKaur. Most people hated it because it had a bad ending just because they like overrated happy endings.

reply

For me it was a happy ending because I thought she ended up with the right man.

She was heading towards reality, while Raj lived in a fantasy world.

I think my biggest problem with the film was finding the lead actor very annoying.

You have NO idea how hard it is for most people to get the simple but 100% accurate review you just made in 3 short lines of comment lol. This is what I felt about the movie, and why i loved it. Yup, the lead was annoying.

~Never underestimate the simplicity of depth~

reply

When you say the lead was annoying, do you mean the CHARACTER or the actor??

Raj, I kind of like him but he was a bit annoying because he was so naive and sheltered!

but the actor, i think Ranbir did an AMAZING job1

reply

I thought the sets were amazing to look at...and the songs were beautiful. I think Ranbir did a brilliant job as the protaganist, especially since the story was pretty much carried on his shoulders. I think Sonam's character wasn't given enough scope for her to perform to her potential. The plot was very simple (mistaken for being weak), I enjoyed the film to a certain extent but I loved Rani throughout it!

I too liked saawariya despite of the fact ,its not wonderfully done by bhansali as liked his earlier movies.
But if you forget its slb movie ,you are certainly going to like it.
The movie has a different taste, its like a beautiful art and all the art lovers will like it.
All other budies can relax and they don't need to worry about sanjay bhansali.SLB will surely make something more better.
He has not done any mistake by making saawariya like RGV has done in his sholay remake.

SAAWARIYA is not one of my favourite films. It's much much more than that. It's an experience that I'll savour as long as I live. I think the problem is that we are used to see movies as primarily narrative experiences; everything else is used to supplement the story. The narrative occupies the centre of cinema. I think Bhansali is doing something very interesting here. He is, in a way, decentralizing the position of the narrative, and showing us that a movie can also be just an experience of the senses. A feast that revels in absolute visual delight!
Please don't watch SAAWARIYA. Feel SAAWARIYA.
