Ahead of its times

this movie is ahead of its times.
like silsila was in the 80s...
lamhe was in the early 90s...
khamoshi was in the mid 90s...
dil se was in the late 90s....

and now saawariya....

it is a piece of art....
though a gay fantasy...

Also like Mera Naam Joker in 1970.

I'm a rebel.

Ahead of its time is only an argument to defend a bad film. This film hasa sever lack of story which results in a flop.

I totally agree with you!

Bump OP.

Its not ahead of its time... its just too surreal, too artistic, too beautiful for a lay man to appreciate. You can't blame everyone looking for a story in a movie which is more of a poetry than story. Bhansali should have prepared himself for the response as this was definitely not a movie that every one in general can appreciate, for me... it was magical! Beautiful, Beautiful film!!!

The thing is, this was not a commercial film for the masses, although it was marketed that way. That is probably Bhansali's biggest fault.

A smaller focus on tv advertising, and rather a word-of-mouth dispersing of this film would have been much more effective, and that would have helped gain critical appeal for the movie (it always seems as popular/commerical movies are critically "criticized", whereas movies that can't afford big advertising gain critical acclaim, generally regardless of the plot of the story).

I didn't like it when it first came out, but I've seen it about 50 times since and I think it's a pretty good film now. I misunderstood the characters at first, and also compared it to OSO at the time, which was really unfair because they are so different.

You can say so, but with the condition of Bollywood present time? nothing will change in Bollywood, another Saawariya type movie release people will still hate it. They are looking for love, family, not sad ending. they want fiction not reality. Sad Indian viewers.

I felt that Saawariya has a timeless quality, rather than being ahead of its time. Like a piece of poetry, like a painting...
