I personally would be afraid to go to Africa at this time because of all the murder and slavery that's going on all over the Dark Continent
There are plenty of places you can go in Africa without being less safe than if you visited any major American city. Post-genocide Rwanda, for example, is now one of the safest countries in Africa and one of only three countries in which you can trek to see the highly endangered mountain gorillas, an experience never to be forgotten. It's also great for chimpanzee treks. For a more traditional safari and the Big Five you can then pop over to neighboring Tanzania, politically stable and another of Africa's safest countries. Even Kenya (my personal favorite) is pretty safe if you limit your exposure to hot spots like Mombasa and Nairobi because the real danger to foreigners in Africa isn't in the bush; it's in the cities or in resorts around cities or near the borders of troublemakers like Somalia. Spend as little time as possible in the city centers and you'll probably be fine. I say probably because there's always the chance something could happen but isn't that true of anyplace? Believe me, there is no place like sub Saharan Africa and one should not let fear stop one from seeing some of it's awe inspiring but ever dwindling landscape and that landscape's majestic inhabitants.
