second series??

anyone know if they'll be a second series, as the ending of series 1 was a bit of a cliffhanger.

I certainly hope so. I, we, all of us living in this house in fact, thought MAYO was just brilliant - excellently written, perfectly acted, extremely well-produced and directed, and with terrific music too! The absolute acme of good television - and I've been watching tv for over forty years and I am usually VERY critical, especially of the over-publicised 'flagship' shows that always seem to have the same actors in them. Most highly touted product from any channel is actually painfully derivative and rarely surprising, obviously, as it is all designed to catch the widest (lowest common denominator?) audience. MAYO was definately not derivative and was wholly surprising, a genuine joy from start to finish. Even the apparent cliffhanger ending was clever and perfectly judged.

I feel strongly that those who didn't 'get' it just failed to take it on its own terms and criticised it for not being something it never set out to be (like for example another awful Amanda Burton/Ross Kemp vehicle shot with moody lighting and featuring a troubled maverick central character).

It certainly earned a place in my heart one of my favorites in a strong line of a particular genre, the alternate world detective story. Yes, you see now, don't you - the whole thing takes place in an alternate reality that is rather more interesting than it is here, full of witty people who can speak in whole sentences and are genuinely amusing without having to use painfully obvious gags. It's all going on just down the road from the venues of MURDER IN SUBURBIA and across the county line from Midsomer. Great stuff. I'll be happy to pay real money for the DVD when it comes out.

There had better be... I can't imagine a life with no more Mayo, sad as that is to admit. I thought the series was fabulous (as anyone who caught any of my reviews on the Beeb site will have realised) - any TV show where a main character admits to fancying Ewoks has got my dedication for life!

I really hope they release the DVDs as well, and if they do I'll definately be setting up a website... I'd do it now, but I haven't got the material to do it with!

I really hope that there is a second series. It's been some time since I have seen a pleasant, witty series in which the main characters work well together, complement each other, and share a common sense of humour. I also liked how understated the series was. Rather than spelling it all out for you, the writers, directors and actors allowed you to work things out, and foreshadowed events earlier in the story.

I must admit I also liked the small running jokes on people's character quirks, Mayo's spelling & grammar pedantry, Alex's need to wear clothes she finds fashionable, Kite's underplaying of his intelligence and Anorak's collaboration to bait others. All these elements mixed together made for extremely pleasant viewing. It was the only new TV show I've seen this year that captured my imagination.

Alas, in their infinite wisdom, the BBC have decided not to make a second series. All complaints should be addressed to the controller of BBC1!

Oh bloody hell. I am actually absurdly distressed to hear that. Are you sure?

It's a long time since something I had NO good expectations of whatsoever captured my attention and imagination so immediately, completely, and lastingly. A real little gem of tv. I keep thinking that the character who posted such a negative review on IMDB (damning with very faint praise) must be a very different person to me indeed. (I guess there must be someone who is the natural audience for Ross Kemp 'dramas'...)

I rarely buy tv series on tape or DVD but I would certainly buy MAYO; obviously its not the sort of thing one would want to watch all the time (even the best becomes dull on a daily basis) but it would be comforting to know I had it available for those times when I really despair that anything with a bit of genuine wit, charm and true character will ever show up on tv ever again. A genuine gem.

I've had a bit of correspondence with the BBC about MAYO and the Good news is that it is at present undecided as to whether there will be a second series. Of course the Bad news is that it isn't CERTAIN there will be a second series.. Too many dense Amanda Burton/Ross Kemp fans not getting the point of MAYO, one guesses.

There's also no clear indication that the series will either be repeated (soon or at all) or whether it will be issued on DVD. Given the fact that the loudest (and in this case most stupid) voices are usually the ones heard at the higher echelons of policy making I'd say if you do have video copies of MAYO you'd better look after them, and if it ever gets a repeat don't miss copying all of them.

It annoys and somehow distresses me that this little jewel of television can have been so completely misunderstood by so many. But then, what can I say, I'm usually the one looking at all the stuff that seems popular with viewers and populist reviewers and thinking "What IS this crap...?!?!?!?!"
