Mel and Rick...what is their relationship?

So I realize they aren't married...is Sam their biological daughter? Or is she Mel's daughter and Rick adopted her? The relationship is so confusing. It seems like she is not his "bio" daughter but just calls him dad. Does anyone know what the deal is?

And Sam is a great character but if she was anymore laid back, she would be dead. I cant imagine her parents not questioning if she is high ALL THE TIME!!!

I also wondered about that relationship, I think Sam is Rick's real daughter, and Mel is his partner he met ... really not much history background to it..

...hahah :)

Why do you think they are not married? I had always assumed they were, I can't see any other purpose for them being together!!

I don't think Mel comes across as the 'wife' type...it's not been explicitly said either way, I don't think...

In the episode where Mel is ill Rick describes her as his partner to the chemist.

In the episode i'm just watching, Sam definitely described Mel as 'Mum', and Marty said that 'she's growing up smart, it must be mel', so suggests they are biologically related...can't get a handle on marriage though, so guess they have kids but aren't married.

Well, the latest episode cleared up the married or not married thing.

reply

Yeah, but for those who did not see it, they are not married. They prefer it that way.

they are not married, sam is their biological daughter, it's a modern family, i know a lot of couples who have kids who aren't married and prefer it that way.
and i guess they probably never question sam or ben, because they think of themselves as kinda hip parents, plus i presumed sam was 18 or over.
