he always seems to go out of his way to point out where Rick has had some misfortune and seems to relish the fact that everything isnt go so well for him. He doesnt seem to have the same approach with other characters.
Does it all go back to the 1st episode when Rick is rude about Michaels cake ?
I don't think he hates him as much as he resents him. While Rick is not completely successful he does have a career in something that he wants to do and he has a family and friends. Because of that Michael is happy to shoot down Rick or relish his career misfortunes to make himself feel better. On some level they do like each other but there are so many insecurities on both sides that their relationship is very un-supportive and strained.
