Genre: Comedy ???

that has to be a mistake, there's no comedy throughout the entire film, except perhaps for the fact that the weird guy "sleeps" with dogs.

MY BUTT THERE IS NO COMEDY!
I laughed too much!!!!

ITS HILARIOUS!
But you have to really GET the movie for it to be funny

reply

I would call it a dark comedy

reply

It's a comedy, but not like a Jim Carrey comedy. The comedy is taken to a higher level.

I was about to say that.

reply

It's a comedy that only certain people get. In that respect it's like being a hunter, many people don't get being a hunter, or understand the joy of killing for food and pleasure.

reply

A higher level is right, like so high you'd have to be a dolphin to appreciate it. There were some 'slightly' amusing parts but in whole a very sad, depressing movie even for pet lovers.

reply

I thought it had some very funny parts, like when she brings the 15 dogs home, and then they destroy her house. I couldn't stop laughing.

To me this movie is a perfect character-driven comedy.

The humor it contains is a result of who the characters are with respect to what they choose to say in certain situations, as opposed to the set-ups & punchlines of the usual situational comedies. (Thank God there was no slapstick in this one!!)

Nearly every scene that includes Layla, Robin, or Bret with Peggy is hilarious because of how they interact together and what they say to each other. Most of the laughs I got were triggered by who the characters are and how incredibly realistic they become. Laura Dern is especially hilarious as the suburban mom.

This film reminds me of the feel of the finest moments of American Beauty, and of the great character-driven TV shows such as My So-Called Life and Northern Exposure.

Year of the Dog is a risky balancing act between humor and sadness, and Mike White pulled it off perfectly. I can't wait to see more of his work.

(I voted this movie a very rare 10/10; I cannot think of any aspect that I would want to change about it.)

Thanks for not being mean about disagreeing with my rating of this movie.

The criterion on which I mostly base my opinion is whether or not a movie violates its own early defined theme and dramatic rhythm to achieve its ultimate plot closure. This film didn't make that common mistake; to me this story and its characters progressed logically, and the initially misguided main character found a socially acceptable way in which to channel her compassion and energy.

Also, all of the actors here enliven their characters realistically (with sometimes wickedly hysterical results) without crossing the fine line into overblown caricature. In my experience this achievement is fairly rare in films, too.

Maybe that's why I equate it with most of Jamie Lee Curtis's Husbands werk ... U just don't know when he's crossed that line of
caricature
& when he's toying with U
I should probably bi that season of SNL he was in.

OK, I'll have to give you that one...I need to see this movie again, memories fade; I guess I just liked it since it didn't completely piss me off the way so many others do.

If you ever want to do a Christopher Guest retrospective, check him out in the last few minutes of Death Wish. Dramatic role as a rookie cop....

I recognised it as a comedy, but from the start of the dog dying and all her futile attempts to rescue the other dogs left me in a puddle of tears. On subsequent viewings I could get into the comedy more.

I am going off on a bit of a tangent here, but it reminded me of some recent issues I was dealing with.
I had a cat die of kidney failure...(was diagnosed in springtime, & passed on in the summer) and that dovetailed towards the end of her life with a rescue situation

(kitten with a squished paw that was being abandoned without care by her owners),

which lead to another (sweet friendly stray with fiv and leuk+)

and another (a schitzy street smart semi feral that passionately loves people she befriends...and hates other cats with a deadly equal passion who had a herniated ovary that could not be removed, so she would still go into a very vocal heat though she couldn't reproduce )

that continued for the next year. I did not go out of my way to find animals, I stumbled into them and could not let them suffer.

Last spring it culminated to the most chaotic situation. I found identical starving (neglected by their owner...the neighbors had to feed them or they did not eat) twin teenage (must of been their first heat, they looked like kittens themselves) cats nursing six babies. I took them all in, got them medical care (with some help from friends) neutering, shots, etc, but they all had a chronic stubborn stomach bug that almost killed all of them off...many rounds of antibotics had to be given. Eight cats with the runs in my apartment (separated from my own resident long suffering two other cats, so make that 10 cats total) is not fun.

I am not a hoarder...I worked my butt off getting every one of them healthy and placed in screened, safe, loving, committed homes. (The litter took a total of half a year to place them all, but I am very pleased with all the homes they went to) I am very, very lucky as I know that fostering/rescue situations do not always have happy endings when there is a chronic health or behavior issue.

Like the movie, sometimes channeling the grief into helping another animal(s) can help. Sometimes it can lead to overestimation of one's ability to save another animal and the situations people can get into are overwhelming. There are so many unwanted and unloved animals***** there are out there, who are suffering from neglect and abuse. There is an overpopulation of healthy loving animals that are are killed because there is no room for them at shelters. I understand Molly Shannon's motivation to take all those dogs and then the catacysmic chaos that followed in her home.

A full time rescue foster woman I know once said that doing rescue work is like joining the Mafia...once you get in you can never really get out. You get one adopted, get some peace then you run into another one, or someone brings one to you. And it is so hard to say no.

*****in case there will be the obligitory response about people suffering too...yes I am all too aware of that. Everything is relative, but that doesn't mean you need to take action in one way, in one proper chain of importance to do good in the world. I know people who would laugh at what I did and make some comment about relating to humans. Interestingly enough these are usually people who take no social action towards any kind of compassionate action themselves, they just sit on the sidelines and smirk.

reply

I can relate from the abandoned dog angle - it is painful 2 see another in so much need - but I've always limited myself 2 two @ a time as I can not stop werking as yet ... maybe some day I will have time 2 give 2 more in need.

I thought Laura Dern was funny. Otherwise not so much - it was more a dark comedy for me. Peggy 'Spade' (good catch by someone else) was too over-the-top for me. I liked certain scenes but overall, she was too nutty.
