Valentine

I alternatively loved and hated this movie. My biggest issue was the Valentine storyline. I couldn't believe that anyone who has spent time around dogs (such as at a public dog park) would adopt a German Shepard with behavioral problems without hesitation, and then bring it home and treat it the same way you treated your little beagle. I would have been scared to death of Valentine. I might have adopted him regardless, but I would have asked a ton of questions, and I would have been very clear about what I should and shouldn't do, how to train him, etc. And if he snapped at my hand when I approached him while he was eating on the first day I had him, I would think Hmm ... maybe he's guarding his food. And if he then BIT my hand when the same thing happened again, I would *definitely* know that something was up. I feel that this was a weak plot element. I just didn't think it rang true to what someone like Peggy would do. She was an irresponsible owner when it came to Valentine, and I just didn't buy that she would do that.

I personally thought that Peggy was just naive, and that it was Newt's major error for not recognizing the type of person (sensitive and a little meek) she was. Especially considering what a knowledgeable person he seemed to be, I really thought he should have known that Valentine would not be a good match for her.

Her life with Pencil was so picturesque and almost perfect that I understood why she might not seem to fully grasp what she was dealing with with Valentine. And besides that, there wasn't much to suggest she'd have any kind of experience dealing with a dog that wasn't 100% stable and perfectly behaved like Pencil was.

So as I said, I thought it was really Newt's fault.

Poor Peggy. Felt so bad for her. She'd just lost pencil and then tried to be loving with Valentine and it just didn't work. Heartbreak.
