Without You

Hate to bring everybody down, but Harry didn't write "Without You". Peter Hamm from the band Badfinger did.

I find this hard to believe.
Next you'll be claiming he didn't write "Everybody's Talkin'"...

reply

LOL, very good, omoo22. Pretty ironic that one of our greatest songwriters had his biggest hits with songs written by others. But of course he did write "One", which Three Dog Night made into a smash.

Well, the score is now 3 to 1 in favor of Badfinger; hkriley, grampashab, and I are know that while Nilsson may have made 'Without You' big in the 'States, Ham and Evans wrote it and recorded it for Badfinger's 1970 album, 'No Dice'. And it's a nice version, too, with a more ragged edge to it than Harry's Big Voice cut, with the narrator is more distraught with How Things Turned Out than yearning.
(Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

"Without You" and "Everybody's Talkin" were the songs that I always heard and was not very impressed by. It was when I started to hear his own songs that I was hooked and had to find Everything of his that I could! People who only know him by these two songs should really look into his other stuff. Long Live Harry!

Especially off of Pandemonium Shadow Show and Son of Schmilsson. I think "Ten Little Indians" and "Jump Into the Fire" are two of the greatest songs known to man, although the latter is on Nilsson Schmilsson, another great album.

Highlander won the oscar...for the best film ever made.

reply

Well you're wrong. Pete Ham and Tom Evans, both of Badfinger, wrote it. Pete's verse and Tom's amazing chorus. Give credit where it's due if you're gonna make a point of it.

Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!

Harry didn't write "Without You" of course, but he did write "Without HER" a song covered by Blood Sweat and Tears on their first album,"Child is Father to the Man".NOT the David Clayton-Thomas B,S and T either. Al Kooper was the founder and lead singer.Maybe this has led to the confusion.

reply

It's actually Pete Ham. I was disappointed that Badfinger got barely a mention like Fred Neil did for his song.

I read in one of Badfinger's CD liner notes that Badfinger was recording at Abbey Road studio and Nilsson happened to be recording "Without You" just down the hall from them. They were excited about Harry's vision of the song and felt he "nailed it".

reply

Okay, I just watched the movie & at the end credits it says Randy Newman wrote Living Without You. So who the hell actually wrote it?!

reply

Different song.
