MovieChat Forums > Feel the Noise (2007) Discussion > why is there a black guy and not latino ...

why is there a black guy and not latino plating the main character?!

This is obsurd!!!! there is finally a main stream motion picture being produced about reggaeton and they have a moreno playing a puerto rican?!! wtf?!! I'm so mad! as if there arent enough latino actors out there to play the part... It seems to me that the character may be mixed, half rican half black... but even so, they could have found a real latino to play the part. and omarion of all people? Come on! I cant imagine him having a real appriciation or understanding of reggaeton or Puerto Rican culture. and another thing, I am a Puerto Rican from the Bronx, and being a latina from the BX I can tell you right now Omarion is gonna have to work hard and be a really really great actor to pull of playing a Puerto Rican from the South Bronx. Because from what i've seen in of him in the past, he doesnt convince me that he can pull it off. He doesnt look like a new yorker at all... especially not a Puerto Rican one!

I don't think that person meant it because he's black, because obviously, Hispanics come in all shapes and colors. It's the fact that he's a black AMERICAN and that he's not Hispanic that sucks. He wouldn't be able to capture the true essence of what being Latino really is. I agree with the comments below me...Victor Rasuk should have played the lead role.

Has anyone noticed that Victor keeps getting menial roles in all his upcoming movies?

reply

the fact that they chose a "moreno" to play the lead as a puerto rican isn't absurd instead what is absurd is that it seems like you dont even know anything about your culture... a big majority of latinos in general are mixed of african and spanish descent so it really shouldn't be surprising that a moreno was chosen...

but i do agree that they maybe didn't chose the right guy to play the part, not because hes black/american but because right now it doesnt seem like he'll be able to pull playing this character off...Omarion doesn't look like a reggaetonero type at all to me either... I know its very stereotypical of me to say this but most people do judge a book by its cover whether they'll admit it or not and plus the guy was in a boy band(B2k)so i dont know if its going to be very believable... and if he does end up pulling it off then kudos to him ...I honestly hope that he'll prove me wrong...

His acting ability will be the determining factor of whether this movie will ultimatly suk or not for me personally

---i think victor Rasuk should have played the lead...he was born in New York and hes of Dominican Descent and his resume is made up of amazing movies like Raising Victor Vargas, Lords of Dogtown ect... where as Omarion was in Fat Albert, You got severed ---

reply

Ok, let me get this straight, he is playing the part of a young man that just gained knowledge that he is of mixed heritage???? Most of you all are not thinking about him just finding out about his Latin descent he not going to have the diction associated with a Latin person. While I understand that people of Latin origin are upset, about this why are you all HATING on Omarion? Why is no one questioning why Esposito is playing his father? He is NOT Latin but Black and Italian, Oh, my bad he LOOKS Latin. Oh and before you try to kick dirt on my back my daughter is of mixed heritage PR, Black and Native American Indian. She has caramel bronzed skin, hazel green eyes and the driest kinky curly hair with about four shades of brown. I grew up in an area that was racially mixed and I am dark brown with brown eyes in fact I am darker that Omarion with wavy hair. I have no Latin lint to my voice but because of the way my daughter looked, I was spoken to in Spanish wherever I went. So again, I ask what is the PROBLEM?

reply

i agree with you. im pr,black, italian, and native american.
im the color "amber honey" my hair is brown with light brown all over.. but i hav brown eyes. some pr's r dark. n some r light skin. i fall under the medium category. cuz i can pass for latino or black. but i agree with evry thing

listen they do casting calls by physical discription the call may read for example:

seeking latino/ puerto rican or lightskinned male 5-7 in height who can pass as a puerto rican of mixed heritage is welcome

And from there they audition who ever shows up and the give the job to who ever is the best also allowing people who are not actually pueto rican but fit the physical discription widen there chances of finding a better actor or the most excellent one for the part.

and the guy is italian and black i think, remember although it is always nice to have someone represent the people they probably picked him cause he was better than everyone else so lets see the movie before we ge mad.

u r sooooooooooooooooooooooooo *beep* racist.

reply

the lead of the film is not supposed to be Puerto Rican or Latin. Thats not what the film is about. If you read the logline you will see that he is a kid from Harlem who is sent to Puerto Rico and meets a girl and also a best friend who are both latin.

reply

Lmao... yea he is sent to Puerto Rico but y would they send him there unless hes Puerto Rican?

reply

whatever. pay back time bitch. what about all those times you goyas were allowed to perpetrate blacks in movies or on tv. oh well what goes around comes around. reggaetone is wack as hell anyways. Sad thing about it is, it tries to incorporate 2 real legit styles of "black" music hip hop and reggae and fuse wit some cheap ass spanish music ugh. Its wack and boring and its already dying out. i'm mad they even makeing a move about it. And I'm very familiar with bronx latino's and there is nothing special about you lol. Nobody needs to go through a great deal of work to portray a latino in the bronx theres isnt much to it. face it ur whole culture is shyt. U should be glad that somebody is even wasteing there $$$ on this dumb ass movie so u can feel good about unoriginal race.

WTF IS MOODYAFTERHRS talking about???!!! it is blowing my mind that a person of this modern day and age could even believe the crap he/she wrote. This person is BASHING A WHOLE CULTURE by calling it UNORIGINAL?? Are you *beep* serious? I would love to know how moody understands Bronx Latinos and their culture and music to such a level that he/she can call it "shyt". If any other rational being would like to reply to this hopeless rasist, please be my guest. Haha, your simple narrowminded mind cannot even comprehend our cultureand quite frankly, it would be a waste of time to attempt to explain it to you. get a *beep* life, creep.

-Fine!! In the meantime, shut your god-damn Daywalker mouth!!

reply

u cant bash moody. i doubt he's a racist. there is some truth to what hes saying. i guess hes shedding some light on things people dont wanna talk about

I'm not trying to come at you wrong, pana. But I used to hang out in da Boogie Down and it's all luv as far as I'm concerned. I'm Black, but Panamanian also. We
BOTH got the SAME enemies. It makes me SICK when I go on sites like migente and hear all this rah-rah against "morenos". It makes me sick when I hear some Black people talk cash ish against "ricans". We got to stop this. 'Cause I can guarantee you a crooked cop + a car full of young Black men or young Latino men, will have the same answer. So let's cut the BS.

That is the reason why racism will never end in this country, and yet you people complaint about others being racist towards you. What about you always bringing up the slavery *beep* to make other people feel sorry for you or to do as whatever you want when most of you if not all were not even around at the time of the slavery?

I have nothing against black people at all, in fact I think blacks are talented in any way. But don't go around disrespecting other people's cultures. It seems that you think you are allowed to say anything 'cause you're black and because of the slavery *beep* yeah it was something bad that shouldn't have happened in the first place, but it did and its over, its been over for a while in case you have not noticed. You go around making fun of other races, in every joke you make, but God forbids we Latinos or any other race say something about blacks 'cause then you all want to go cry to Rev. Jackson. DO NOT DO TO PEOPLE WHAT YOU WOULDN'T LIKE OTHER PEOPLE TO DO TO YOU (apologies for the caps, but this as*hole got me upset).

If Zoe Saladana can play a black girl from the South in Drumline, then Omarion certainly can play a Latino. Latinos come in all different colors. Oh, maybe you thought they all look like Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez. If so, you really need to get out more.

reply

As others have said he's playing a half-boricua/half-moreno character, not a total boricua, and he supposedly only discovers the boricua part after the fact, so it could work. I'm not sure Omarion is the right actor, but keep in mind that not only do African Americans play Latino roles, but the reverse is the case increasingly too, especially for Afrolatinos and Afrolatinas like Zoë Saldana. It goes both ways. (And then Af-Ams and Latinos play West Indians--cf. Haven--and Black British actors increasingly play Black American roles--cf. Idris Elba, etc.) It's all about the African Diaspora, which is pretty amazing.

I kind of wish they had chosen Rasuk, who is an Afrolatino, to play the part, because he could pull off both African American and Boricua even though he's Dominicano-American, but you know Hollywood, they probably felt they had to get a big name for the part.

reply

I like Omarion is a good actor but this is just dumb!

Omarion is not right for the part, not because he's black, because there are plenty of black people who are latino but beacause he is not latino, he's only african american and that's not right, for someone to play this part and not even be latino, its wrong. And he doesn't know the culture or anything about reggaeton, he probably thinks that reggaeton and rap are the same, and its not, this movie is going to suck!

reply

It's only fitting. Blacks started rap anyway. Most of the Music from the Latin culture that's popular in america was started by Africans and Jamacians anyway. All the hip shaking and drums came from africa. That's why the congos are do popular in the the Salsa and Muerege. So next time your Hip-Hopin and dropping it like it's hot yelling to your white friend that it's a Latin thing. Check yourself, and say would you say that to a black person with a straight face. Naw. Because we coined that phrase too. Because before you thought it was a Latin Thing, it was a BLACK THING.

hey jim_kellys_afro first ofall im not light skinned and second ofall i directed the comment at a balck concited person who thinks they is the shyt and thinks africa started everything so b4 u go running ur mouth u need 2 get ur facts straight

reply

Actually Africans did make "congos" which gives the drum "congo" it's name... the Congo is in Africa. And actually, PR and DR are afro-latino countries. A lot of the music, dancing, food, etc comes from a fusion of African, Spanish, and Native cultures. So Africans didn't "invent" salsa, but African dance and culture had a big influence on it. And those are facts. I'm Rican and Black (and some other stuff but that's beside th point), also I studied African Diaspora (the dispersement of African people throughout the entire world), and I took Salsa dance, & Afro-Caribbean dance. I learned that fact, that the cultures from DR & PR have a large African influence, from all of those classes I took. Latinos tend to act as though it's an insult to acknowledge that their cultures has ANYTHING to do with African anything... but it does. There is nothing to be ashamed of. We're all brothers and sisters. And all of this Blsck vs Latino stuff has to stop. We're all the same. There are Latinos darker than African Americans, so what's the beef? Plus, we are all mixed race (study your history). African Americans tend to be mixed with White from slave masters and Natives, which is why American Blacks look so different from Africans. DR & PR (& Brazil, etc) tend to be mixed with Spanish or Portugese, Native, and African. The only difference there is skin tone discrimination that happened a lot down there, which is why most of them hate Haitians. Plus there were less African slaves than in the States, especially in PR.

In this particular movie, Omari plays Rob. Rob is a young, Black, aspiring rapper from NY. His dad is an Afro-Latino man living in PR, whom he's never even seen before. His mom is Black. He gets into some trouble and someone wants him dead, so his mom decides to finally let him meet his Rican father, Roberto, and go live with him in PR for a while until the heat dies down in NY. It's not really supposed to be a Rican guy... he's supposed to be Black. I do agree that Omari isn't the right choice, seeing as some of his feature would've needed to be a little more Latino in order for it to be believable that he's mixed. When have you seen a mixed kid that looks THAT Black? Some look more Black than others, but none look THAT Black. He could've had some Latino down the line, like Grandfather or something, but that kid looks Black. They could've pressed his hair out or something... But his face is similar to Giancarlo's. So it sorta works... barely.

reply

SINCERELY RAVEN IS RIGHT

ALL LATIN DANCE HAVE AFRICAN ROOTS, BOMBA PLENA SALSA WAWANCON MERENGUE REGGEATON BUT AFRICANS DID NOT MAKE THOSE DANCES. ALL OF THOSE ARE A MIX AS RAVEN EXPLAINED EARLIER.

NOW I DONT AGREE WITH THE WHOLE "HE'S TOO BLACK" THING. I WISH WE COULD POST PHOTOS SO YOU COULD SEE WHAT I MEAN. IM PUERTO RICAN (FROM THE ISLAND) BUT IF YOU SAW A PHOTO OF OUR FAMILY REUNIONS YOU'D BE SUPRISE MY BROTHER LOOKS WHITE (BLOOD HAIR BLUE EYES, MY SISTER BRONZ SKIN CARMEL EYES REDISH BROWN HAIR, IM FAIR SKIN BLACK HAIR AND EYES) MY UNCLE ON MY MOTHERS SIDE COULDNT BE ANY BLACKER AND TALL 6'1!!! AND MY GRANDFATHER (HIS BROTHER) IS FAIRER SKINNED THAN ME AND BARELY 5'6!

SO THE WHOLE THING ABOUT HIS LOOKS MEANS NOTHING NOW I DO AGREE THAT HE WAS NOT THE RIGHT ACTOR FOR THIS MOVIE NOT BECAUSE HE'S AMERICAN BALCK OR WHATEVER ITS THE FACT THAT HE'S A SUCKY ACTOR! HE COULDNT PULL OF THIS ROLE AND THE MOVIE LOST ALOT OF WORTH BECAUSE OF HIS ACTOR OR BETTER SAID LACK OF.

reply

yeah but cs98152 put on sum bachata, salsa or merengue for an african american & theres no way that they will no how to dance it like a latino... && btw its not a black thing its a CULTURE THING...

reply

This is the funniest thing I've ever heard. Dance it like a latino? I know latinos who can't dance and/or don't even not like salsa, bachata or merengue. I'm African American and I can dance to merengue, bachata, salsa music like nobody's business. It works the other way as well . . . I can't really dance to hip hop while there are latinos who can effortlessly. In the end it doesn't really have to do with ethnicity . . . you either got the moves or you don't.

As far as Omarion playing a black latino, I think his race/ethnicity just DOES NOT matter. The only thing we should be worried about is whether he performed his role well and whether this was a well done film. Judging by the reviews of the movie, I think I might just stay away from this film. It's a shame, too, because I actually like reggaeton and would love to see it in a movie.

i agree with bxmunecadulce this movie is *beep* retarted they have like no lation actors playing in this movie i mean they have sum but really at least the main character should of been puerto rincan even if he is moreno but they have omarion playing the main character who isnt even puerto rican or even latino at all so i find that major bullsh*t................

what is really sad about this thread is that black people and latinos are trying to tear one another down, when really we are fused together culturally. Yes, we both have different cultures but through the age of exploration, but latinos and blacks have undeniably impacted each other. but honestly, there have been rasist comments that reflect ignorace.
