Not much chemistry

I didn't feel that these people where really friends. Tough to believe that he would pick this group to open up to. There didn't seem a history of intimacy between them.

Also, the Jesus thing was too much. It would have made more sense if they had played up his regenerative powers as the reason he survived but they didn't. Instead he says just the opposite -he used his buddhist monk background to slow his heart. This makes it completely unnecessary for someone with his unique lifespan to have been the Christ figure and essentially just a wacky coincidence it was him.

Edit:
Hmm, I like johannasisko’s read on this which resolves these issues -for me at least:

The reason John gave for opening up to this group of people wasn't based mainly on their friendships though, but rather that they were a group of people with the specific intellectual backgrounds that they had.

And the reason he used his buddhist monk background to slow his heart was not to survive, but to allow himself to get away from the situation he found himself in. He would have already known he'd survive.

In that respect, his unique lifespan had nothing to do with him becoming the Christ figure, that's just what people turned him in to afterwards based on what happened.

So in retrospect, the Jesus thing was made too much of by the normal people in the world by what they did/said afterwards for their own purposes, which John confirmed when he said his main intent at the time had only been to pass along a simple message of peace and that he'd been amazed at how everything had been blown out of proportion as he watched it all unfold throughout the following years/centuries in anonymity from afar.
