Peter Lenkov, the writer and producer behind current CBS reboots of “Hawaii Five-o” and “MacGyver,” will serve as the writer and executive producer on the new version of the classic 1980s series, which had previously gotten a pilot production commitment at the network. Eric Guggenheim, an executive producer and writer on Lenkov’s “Hawaii Five-o,” will also write and executive produce. John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment will also executive produce. CBS Television Studios will co-produce with Universal Television.

I wish we could all tell CBS thanks but no thanks. Unfortunately people will buy into it like they did with Hawaii Fake-0 and FakeGyver.

I'm guilty as charged there. I just happen to like Glen Larson from the 70's/80's, throw in Donald Bellisario and I'm sold.

I know neither will have anything to do with this and I'm sure it'll fall of my radar within an episode or two but there's a lot of potential here if they go about it properly (Which they won'!).

I couldn't get into the new Macgyver.I watched half of the first season and just lost interest.I guarantee either Magnum or Higgins will be a woman in this. And it will have a generic procedural case of the week feel to it.Studios love to crap on the original material and change things up.

They could have Lily (Thomas and Michelle's daughter) take on the role of "Magnum" and keep the continuity of the original show going with her namesake.

They could even have a Robyn Masters who is the granddaughter of Robin/Higgins keeping up the appearance of the several charitable foundations which they helped establish in the original.

I'm not saying they should but it would be nicer than a reboot.

Or we could have Carol or Maggie having brought up Thomas' child to them after the show finished, a way of showing that the legacy continues.

The real problem comes in trying to get that mix that Higgins, TC and Rick brought to the equation.

I'm not sure if Peter Lenkov appreciates the richness of Magnum PI enough to properly develop it, I hope he does it proud though.

I kind of like the idea of a continuity with Magnums daughter in that it would allow Selleck to reprise his role in a cameo. But it would eliminate Rick T.C. and Higgins. They were a big part of the original.

Roger and Larry could make an appearance in some capacity but John died in November of last year and so Higgins (As we knew him) is certainly out.

Perhaps they meet up for his funeral and the ball gets rolling from there. The new Magnum has a new group of friends with their own names and dynamics. It's not quite the same but it pays respect to the original by not trying to overwrite anyone as someone new (Other than a new Magnum).

I think an approach which keeps fans of the original happy and introduces the idea of revisiting the original for new fans would please everyone.

I don't know if the Hillerman family would be happy with Higgins having a funeral but they might respect all the joy John gave to many in his performances.

From Deadline TV:

Fast & the Furious’ Justin Lin will direct CBS’ Magnum P.I. pilot from Peter Lenkov (Hawaii Five-O), Davis Entertainment (The Blacklist), CBS TV Studios and Universal TV Studios.

reply

Justin Lin is no small change, this pilot must pack quite the punch.

I don't know if his pace keeps up with life on Hawaii but here's to hoping the car chases are exciting.
