What happened to Kate Layton? (Possible SPOILERS)

Just wondering what happened to Kate Layton, the wife of attorney Robert Layton (Rob Lowe) in the sequel?

She isn't mentioned at all by Robert or anyone else... until the very end of the movie when Robert is "opening up" to Nathan...

His daughter Lily isn't mentioned either until the very end...

Maybe something was there but I missed it?

Robert Layton didn't have a very big role in the movie (despite the huge picture of him on the cover, which I resent). There was no necessity for Kate or the daughter in the movie.

Idiots are fun. No wonder every village wants one.

His wife isn't dead--you see her very briefly outside the church, talking to the preacher with her husband. The daughter is only mentioned, as you noted.
