How old is Matt supposed to be?

Ron Livingston was born in 1967; when they showed the flashback to when Matt's mom died, everything about the hospital decor and his clothes and hair suggested late '80s/early '90s, not 1978-80. Did they ever SAY his age?(I got to the show late and haven't seen every episode yet)
