In what year is this suppose to be happening?

Just started watching this show, because I loved Beautiful Girls...

but there is one thing that doesn't really work for me, supposedly this guys are in their late 20's/ early 30's... and the story happens in modern days (2007) so they would have to be born around 1980...

But there is something to their reactions (like the music that they listen) that really puts them in to the 70's teens generation... I mean this sure I listened to Kiss when I was a kid (I'm 29) but my generation was much more influenced by Alice n' Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam...heck even Green Day & Fat Boy Slim...

so is it a regional thing? or just that the writers had this planned for happening 10 years ago, and didn't bother to update it?

In the seeason 2 episode "stand alone by me" , it has flashbacks to when Nick, Eddie and co were 10 years old. I can't remember off hand, but it said a year on the screen that was in the mid 1970's. Which if i've worked it out right plus 18 years which is what the plot symopsis says on hear would make them all round 28ish. Which sets the present year for the entire programme at the late 1990's early 2000. Obviously in the 10 minute series finalie on the season 2 dvd, it says 7 years later as the time that ties up the story and brings it to an end. That would make it round about 2007, when the 10 minute finale is set, thus enforcing the idea that the whole programme, was set around the late 1990's. Sorry to go on a bit with this one. I wouldn't mind, but i've only just discovered this programme like 4 weeks ago, and i've watched every episode and become obsessed with the programme in that time!!! :-D haha. Hope it answers your question

"HOW DO YOU LOOSE A WOMAN???"
"You forget to cherish her." - Suite life of Zack and cody.

Thank you for the reply!

I Also think this happens in the late 90's, but somethings just don't work, like the guy who doesn't get out of his house since 9/11...

Also, the show references 9/11 a lotboth in Nick's book and his agoraphobic friend's reason for not leaving the house.

Regarding Phil not leaving the house for 5 years. After 9-11 he was affraid and didn't go outside very much, then he realized he had everything he needed at home and just didn't go out anymore. It wasn't that he just didn't go outside immediately after 9-11, it was his fear that caused him to go out less and less and then just not at all. Too bad the show didn't last longer, it would have been interesting to see his adjustment to going out more and more.

Sorry but this isn't even close.

Season one takes place in 2007, the same year it aired. The cast of friends (Nick, Eddie, Owen, Hannah, etc) were all the same age as me (28-29 years old) at that time. It's mentioned several times that it's been 6 years since the events of 9/11.
In the flashback to when the boys were 10 years old, it was 1990. "Epic" by Faith No More was released that year (it played on the radio in the episode) and they liked Skid Row and Cinderella, both of whom were popular around that time.
Nick, Eddie, Owen, Phil, Eich, and Hannah would have all been born between 1979 and 1981.

A lot of the music doesn't fit. They played a lot of 70s and 80s songs for some reason.

At the start of episode 1 it says 'Summer 1997 Knight's Ridge Massachusetts'.As Nick leaves Knight's Ridge, Boston's 'Don't Look Back' from 1978 is playing and his friends play along on tennis racket and spade etc. Then soon after '10 years later'comes up on the screen and Nick is in New York City.
As Nick leaves New York City on his way back to Knight's Ridge Three Dogg Night's - 'Shambala' from 1975 is on the radio and he sings along. Unlike in the UK rock music is inherent in US culture and I can only guess his father must have played this music to death for them to know it so well, as they weren't even born when it was released.

Interesting to note Ikey's 10 year transformation was to grow a beard and turn his ten year old new looking cap the proper way round.

I understand the 70's/80's music may not fit the time, but it is a small town and I have noticed in small American towns love classic rock and as long as they music fits in a flash back scene it is not such a bad thing. In addition they play a lot of music by Boston, and the show is based in a small town in MA. In addition, the show was inspired by the movie, Beautiful Girls and both are loosely based on writer, Scott Rosenberg's personal life. He probably grew up listening to all of that music. This show has the best music I have ever seen/heard on television.

I think the music is really diverse and one of my favorite parts of the show! I am about the same age as the characters are supposed to be. Music is a huge part of my life, I've spent many an hour thinking about how a person's musical taste is formed and honestly, it can come from anywhere. Parents, older siblings/cousins, friends, etc. They play a lot of classic rock but they play a lot of current stuff to. I think it's right on.

I agree. Aside from the casting, the characters and the storylines, the soundtrack is awesome. I've found so many great songs from this show.

2007/2008 (New Years)
10 years since Nick left the Ridge in 1997
6 years since 9/11
18 years since they last saw Angela Firelli

Eddie, Owen, Nick, Ikey and Phil are all about 28.
Big Cat is 30.
