Japanese nightwear

I'm probably ignorant of Japanese culture, but why does Lain go to bed in a bear costume?

reply

Because she's a kid. Like some kids still sleep in those race-car beds. It's to show that she's still a kid in her mind (in comparision to others of her age that act more grown-up already)

Then don't do anything. Don't come near me. All you ever do is hurt me.

reply

At age 13, she still wears the pajamas of a 7 or 8 year old. Possibly a bit of a comment on her character...

reply

it is. the fact that it is a bear has some meaning as well. something to do with avoiding confrontation and things of the like. thats also why she wore the bear hat in the dance club.

reply

Still, Japanese do have some extreme fashions.

My friend still wears PJ's to bed and he's 19. Weird?

Do not question Uncle!

reply

I heard that the reason for the frequent occurence as bears as props was a symbol used by the director of Lain. apparently he uses bears in all his anime.

But on another level, I think it just shows us her innocence at the beginning of the anime

reply

The use of bears was because of the director. Apparently he uses bears in all of his anime's, it's like his 'tag'... or so I heard.

But on another level I think it just represents Lain's innocence

reply

Yes that is disturbing. You should tell your friend to grow up and stop acting like an 8 year old.

reply

The whole bear theme isn't just symbolic, the style of pj's are called kigurumi. Look it up.

reply

It looked like an animal-themed onesie. The op posted this in 2006, and onesies are becoming popular in Western nations now...
