What is the 80s film this story is a remake of?

I remember seeing a film that came out in the 80s. It featured a group of kids who go camping in the woods and are stalked by a cannibal hermit who lives in the woods in a cave and attacks and eats campers.

The thing that made this film unique though was an added supernatural element. Apparently the hermit originally fled into the woods with his children after killing his wife. Later the kids died but continued to haunt the woods and the ghost children actually helped the campers escape their father.

It wasn't made completely clear if the little girl in this film was a ghost but it's pretty apparent to me this film was heavily influenced by this old film. But I can't remember the name of this old movie! Does anyone know? It's actually not a bad movie.

The group-of-kids-in-the-woods-stalked-by-a-killer formula has been made and remade many times over before Somebody Help Me. I'm not a horror movie watcher, but Friday the 13th is the earliest such movie that I know of. SHM seems to borrow formulas from several different horror films. It's very possible that the film you saw from the 80's influenced SHM in some way.

Yep, I know the film you're talking about. It's 'The Forest' (1982), directed by Donald M. Jackson, which is about;

a) A Cannibal Hermit who,
b) Stalks the aforementioned forest which,
c) Is visited by two couples on a camping trip, of whom one pair wind up as dinner while the other two,
d) escape with the help of the aforementioned ghost children,
e) who are the already-mentioned hermit's own kids that were eaten by him in order to survive the forest during a particularly nasty storm.

I think that this movie was particularly memorable for the fact that the surviving couple consisted of a male that is a gibbering wreck while the lady is a take charge no-nonsense action woman who handles the situation with aplomb.

Hope that's cleared it up for you!

Yes, thank you, that is the film! Do you agree with me that the writers of Somebody Help Me probably saw In The Forest and were making somewhat of an homage to that movie?

I'm pretty sure that the writers of this movie saw a WHOLE bunch of 80's horror movies set in the forest (I mention the 80's specifically 'cause that's the decade when all the best - and worst backwoods-set horror flicks come from!). Yes, I'm pretty sure that this film borrowed heavily from previous movies like Just Before Dawn (81), The Final Terror (85) and The Forest (82), but the movie I most remember having a deja vu experience about while watching 'Somebody Help Me' was The Zero Boys (86) which was an action-horror romp. The REAL title of this movie should have been 'Somebody Help Me - We need an Original Story'!!!
