Anthony Hopkins is a nice guy

Saw the screening last night and Anthony Hopkins was totally different from what I had envisioned him to be. He was actually pretty affable and charming...and was really nice after the screening greeting everyone. He was much more like his character in Meet Joe Black....energetic and friendly.

The audience was a little shocked by the movie, though.... it's like Mullholland Drive on pcp. But, it was interesting to hear Hopkins take on it.

reply

did u like the movie ?

reply

What was Hopkins' take on the movie? He didn't make an appearance when I saw it at Sundance, but "Mulholland Drive on PCP" is a pretty good description.

I know I'm shouting, I like to shout.

reply

I admit that I thought that the movie went a little crazy with all the camera tricks.....literally every second of the frame or even every 1/2 second has some kind of effect like blur, echo, etc....and I loved Mullholland Drive and Twin Peaks. Christian Slater was good in it, but I think most audiences probably wouldn't react well to the movie because it's definitely not a popcorn movie for the masses. LOL. Like Tony said, he didn't make this movie to please others....He made it on a subject he wsas fascinated by. I thought that Tony did a really good job writing dialogue for that Christian Slater scene....one thing Hopkins understands is acting and I think he can get good performances out of actors.... I would be interested in seeing what Tony's next film is like. Too bad you didn't get to see Anthony Hopkins speak afterwards....it was a real treat. He has a real good sense of humor. Like a funny guy at an English pub who's refined but yet charming. The movie seemed more interesting once he started talking about what inspired him to do it. That he initially had meetings with bondsmen, but they wanted to take control and he was like screw it....life is too short. He had kind of an inspirational message too about no fear that he mentioned to this mother who said she had a son who was an aspiring screenwriter/waiter--that one should not be afraid to get out of our comfort zone and approach life with no fear....it's just a movie. They're not going to put you in jail for making a movie they don't like. I"m trying to remember what his take on the movie was....but when he explaiend it made a lot of sense. The funny thing most his actors didn't know what the movie was about even after they read it...only Christian Slater "got it." Hopkins said that he was always fascinated by how powerful time....its the only thing that we can't control...once the moment has passed its over. He was also fascinated by our dreams and subconscious and that a lot of things can be going on at the same time, which I guess explains why that movie seemed like from the point of view of a guy who was losing his mind. Someone did ask him if the fact that it was from the point of view of someone who had all these psychological problems....if it was based on any personal experience. He just laughed and made some joke. I don't know....I've always thought Hopkins was a great actor, so that q & a stuff and the afterward where he talked to the people in the room was interesting to me.

reply

Yea, hes a great guy....seemed like you enjoyed his talks. I like his views on life and his work, no nonsense....hes just down to earth and real.

reply

Yeah, down to earth....that's the phrase. It's not like I expected him to be Hannibal Lector, but I was pleasantly surprised at how charming and gracious he was in person. Some celebrities are disappointing in person....he was the opposite. It's actually made me an even bigger fan now...I'll probably go and re-rent some of his movies. I want to see how Tony evolves as a film-maker...he's obviously not trying to go with convention.

reply

I SAW THE TRAILER.THE MUSIC SEEMS BEAUTIFUL. WHAT´S YOUR OPINIÓN?

reply

His music is wonderful, we were lucky enough to hear his compositions last year in Texas, some of which is used in the film, and like the other guy has mentioned he is a lovely man to meet

reply

yeaa it is beautiful, Hopkins is a talented musician too

I'll probably go and re-rent some of his movies

Oh thats cool....which films do you have in mind?

reply

This is going to sound funny....but I really liked Meet Joe Black.... I like the concept of Death Takes a holiday....and holiday movies like that... Everyone remembers Hopkins for his chilling portrayal of Hannibal Lector, but I also really like it when he plays more vulnerable human characters. He was really good in the Edge....and in the screening he mentioned World's fastest Indian which I have not seen. I might also check out Bram Stokers Dracula and Great Expectations (the tv series...and it happens to be my favorite book). I heard Fracture was good...it's one of the few movies of his I didn't get a chance to run out to the theaters to see because I was busy at the time. Are you a fan of Hopkins? Which movies of his would you recommend?

sidenote: It's pretty impressive that he came up with the music. Usually actors/actresses think they can do music and come up with some really bad stuff...but his music was real good. If no one mentioned it, I would have thought that he hired someone to do it.

reply

I personally am not too fond Fracture, I didnt think it was that good and rather forgettable but you can check it out...most people seemed to like it, so...

I loved Hopkins in The Edge too...

I would recommend The Worlds Fastest Indian, hes wonderful and its very different from the usual hopkins fare.

Yea...I'm a big fan of Hopkins..I would also recommend The Remains of the Day, Shadowlands, Howards End, Nixon, The Elephant Man, The Bounty and Titus...just to start you off hehe

reply

Sounds like you're a drama fan. :) Since all your recommendations are heavy dramas. Did you like Meet Joe Black? I've seen Nixon...it was good. But, now I have a bunch of new movies to put on my Blockbuster queue.

reply

Yea I did like Meet Joe Black....

Nixon is one of his best performances and films, I wrote a paper on it for film class, that was tough LOL.

hehe, I suppose I do like dramas especially ones with Hopkins' in them

oh btw, I'm really looking forwards to Hopkins' upcoming film with James Ivory "The City of your final destination"...I have read the book, its wonderful and I love Hopkins' character..hes gonna shine in it that role So, I would recommend that film too even though I havent seen it yet LOL

What did you guys think of Titus?

reply

Yeah i just went to the screening of Slipstream here in Chicago...and I'm sure Anthony is a nice guy...but he did not sign one autograph at the premiere...i thought it was kind of strange..but then again maybe it was the other people he was with causing him to be so...distant from the audience

reply

That's interesting, look up the book "Below the Line" by J.R. Helton on Amazon. Describes his experiences as a painter on movie productions that he worked on. Man I swear this guy hated everyone. He really had nothing good to say about any of the actors he was around (stories about Wilford Brimley, Patrick Duffy, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carey, Robert Duvall, among others, stories that really make me wonder why people worship idiot celebrities). The exception was Anthony Hopkins. The one guy he had good things to say about. Described him as a truly genuine, warm and considerate human being.

Someone I used to work with told me once that celebrities have become our royalty. Hell, the brits don't even revere their royalty like we do celebrities (Well Diana excepted, I suppose). It's like I always say, "Hello, people, their not gods. Their just people and for the most part not even good people at that."

Anyone interested should go by Amazon and check out the excerpt. If you remember Wilford Brimley's oatmeal commercials you'll find the story about him at the beginning amusing to say the least...

"Evil people" in hollywood, say it isn't so...

reply

Well, all celebs are really paid-for advertisers, and that's it. Their agents get them jobs to appear advertising stuff, and the celeb actors push up the box office sales. If you actually think these people are better than you, then you've probably got 'issues'!! :)
Anyway, then you get the 'celebrities' that appear to be drug addicted, and sometimes even perverted, which doesn't look good does it! Sorry though, this is way off topic now....
Anthony Hopkins has always come across as a nice fellow, the film The Fastest Indian also shows his fantastic character acting.

reply

Good point. These days I consider actors to simply be employees of the marketing arm of corporate america.

ANTHONY HOPKINS BETTER NOT QUIT HIS DAY JOB. THE DVD OF THIS SHOULD BE PACKAGED WITH A DIAPER BECAUSE IT WAS A LOAD OF CRAP. THIS VILE WASTE OF CELLULOID MADE DAVID LYNCH LOOK LIKE A GENIUS, AND DAVID LYNCH IS A PRETENTIOUS WASTE OF TALENT. I WOULD NOT SEE THIS MOVIE AGAIN IF IT WERE PLAYING IN MY CONTACT LENSES, AND I'M A HUGE ANTHONY HOPKINS FAN.

He may be a nice guy, but this movie sucks like a Hoover on steroids.

He is indeed a nice guy and a not-so-nice director, but he'll live this down. Actually, he already has.
