The Floating Mountains; A Geologic Oddity (in China)

The magnificent pillars shown in this video tower as much as 1,000 feet above the surrounding landscape. They have near vertical cliffs and inspired countless settings in movies and video games. Known as the Zhangjiajie Pillars or Floating Mountains, they are a truly fascinating geologic oddity. These pillars are not typical karst landforms but rather are composed out of quartz rich sandstone. This video will discuss these magnificent pillars and how they formed.

If you like those, look up the "islands in the sky" down in South America. They too are these odd, isolated plateaus in the middle of the Amazon that have nearly vertical sides. To this day, they are still difficult to visit, and they have plants and animals living up on their tops that are not seen in the jungles down below.
