Cameron Gonna Be Pissed
Avatar will fall to comic book movie
shareBased on inflation it won't beat it.
shareGood catch! Somehow Endgame looks to net 2Bn but not much more. Understandable as it's the lesser movie (compared to last year's infinity war) of course there is a massive marketing machine at work but at the end of the day people need something more than comics.
shareInflation in the last 10 years is only about 18 cents on the dollar. That being said Endgame will have to make more than $3.289 billion in order to top Avatar adjusted for inflation. Infinity War was about $74 million behind and while it might be the superior movie to Endgame overall, Endgame is the end of a saga and it sold 5x more pre ticket sales in the first week than Infinity War did. We'll just have to wait and see.
shareAvatar didn't suck in my opinion. It just wasn't that original, the basic story has been done before many times, on film and in print. The ending was predictable. Still, in spite of all that it was fun to watch.
Can't honestly see how they're going to fill four sequels though. The story will have to get a lot bigger and a lot more original. By waiting ten years to release the first follow-up they've made sure anyone under 18 won't remember the first installment and will have to watch it before seeing the next one. If number two bombs, they will already have made a huge investment in three, four, and five. They'll have to decide whether it makes more sense to cut their losses there or complete the series and wring whatever they can out of the box office and home video/streaming markets. James Cameron will be blacklisted in Hollywood until the end of time!
But why is Cameron 'gonna be pissed'?
shareHe must be crying uncontrollably in his submarine.
shareJames Cameron has two of the highest grossing films of all time. Titanic won a lot of the big Oscar categories. Avatar was nominated in the big Oscar categories. His films are superior to the mediocrity the Marvel Universe has put out even if you push aside the box office and the Oscars.
