No famous lines from the highest grossing movie?

How can the highest grossing movie of all time (and by some accounts this makes it the best movies of all time) not have any memorable lines that have made their way into pop culture?

Some examples:

Star Wars: "Luke, I am your father", "use the force"
Forrest Gump: "Run, Forrest, run!""Life is like a box of chocolates"
Jaws "You're gonna need a bigger boat"
Terminator 2 "Hasta la vista baby", "I'll be back"
Captain Phillips "I'm the captain now"
Goodfellas "Funny how? Like a clown?"
A Christmas Story "You'll shoot your eye out kid"
Wizard of Oz "We aren't in Kansas anymore" "I'll get you.. and your little dog too!!"
Titanic "I'm the king of the world!!"
ET "ET phone home"
Scarface "Say hello to my little friend!"
Apocalypse Now "I love the Smell of napalm in the morning"
Big Lebowski ... let's not even get started.

etc etc etc

Avatar doesn't have any lines like this.

Where are the memorable characters? Memorable scenes even?

Darth Vader
Hannibal Lecter
The Godfather
The Wicked Witch
Forrest Gump
The Terminator
Alien
Freddy Kreuger
Snow White
Little Mermaid

Say any of those names and everyone will know who you are talking about. I have never heard anyone mention any Avatar characters by name. I have heard "the blue chick alien" and "the paralyzed dude" and that's about it. That tells you a lot right there.

What a strange movie this Avatar; giant box office earnings, little to no staying power in our daily lives. Just like the bag of popcorn you ate watching it, once it was done it was never thought of again.

reply

The power of the cinematography in Avatar hasn't even sunk in yet. Once that does, once these amazing, new, breathtakingly beautiful characters become common to us, their dialogue might stick out more.

reply

"I see you."

reply

"You are not in Kansas anymore!"

reply

I can't help but love all of Quaritch's dialogue with Jake when they first meet in that hangar bay. I don't know. He may seem like a stereotype to these people but he's got a lot of character in that scene.

reply

About 20 movies before Avatar can claim "You aren't in Kansas anymore" including the Wizard of Oz. The Matrix is one that easily comes to mind.

reply

Sorry but "I see you" is not a thing. Nobody says it, it does not evoke any kind of reaction from people.

reply

Again, Avatar is unlike any other successful film in history. The characters are so uncommonly new, interesting and beautiful, just by virtue of their vibrant colors and alien features, it's hard to look at something as plain as the script or any other human device the same way.

reply

Funny I never see any kids running around at Halloween in Avatar costumes. Lots of Iron Man, Captain America, Frozen. Never the vibrant aliens of Avatar.

And the script is everything. Movies are stories, how the story is told is what makes it memorable. Razzamatazz special effects are neat-o in the moment, but soon forgotten. A good script though... magic.

reply

LOL. Avatar has a story. It has a script. It's the genius of Cameron's revolutionary use of cinematography that's blinding audiences from fully appreciating his scripts.

reply

I can't wait for the new one.

I do hope the rumors are true. I hope there's footage used from the lowest point in the ocean and I hope he introduces a new framerate and forces theaters to update their gear to host them... much like Tarantino did with The Hateful Eight.

The only difference is by starting to record movies at 48 or 60fps ...he'll be introducing technology no one will want to go without again. Even 3D changed the industry but people don't really NEED 3D.. or most don't. Once you see a new version of clarity in movies, it's hard to go back to pre-1080p, etc..

in the U.S.

It is still #1 Worldwide by a HUGE margin

I'm a Gunslinger. I deal in hard calibers.

reply

Not even close. Sure, if you just look at the US market, but that is really completely irrelvant these days, at least by itself. The worldwide take is what winds up deciding how successful a film ultimately is and Avatar still destroys Star Wars on this front. So nice try, but sorry no cigar. Avatar is still #1 and by a pretty large margin. Star Wars simply wasn't nearly as successfu as Avatar in overseas box offices and thus nowhere near as successful as Avatar overall. Again, looking at just the US market is pretty irrelevant in the modern box office.

True, true. What about Gone with the Wind?

reply

Well , here are some memorable lines that I remember :

Sigourney Weaver : Get away from me , you blue alien b!tch ! ( mimic her own line in 1986 Aliens movie )

-zero sadana : why did you call me to the middle of the forest in the middle of the night ?

-sam worst thing ton : Im a sick , perverted human so I get attracted to fugly "blue monkeys" like you instead of normal pretty human girls . I want to do something really fun with you .

-zero sadana : NNNOOO , please dont rape me . I can offer some of my best friends to you instead , like the girl Dfwuesmx is a good hunter , or Jstrmkerf is very cute , meaning she is less fugly than me on "blue monkeys" 's standard .

-sam worst thing : But I only want your body . And because we are savage animals , we will do it before wedding , without any protection/contraception , and in the forest .

Next morning :
-zero sadana : No , they destroyed my tree , now I have to use other trees as toilets .

-sam worst thing : Quit you eternal b!tching , you b!tch . Just plant another tree and stop crying over "spilled tree" . I raped you last night so you are my b!tch now , so listen to me .

-zero sadana : Because your friends destroyed my toilet , so it is clearly your effing fault . Eff off , I dont want to see your fugly face again .

-sam worst thing : Dont worry , I will betray my superior white human race and help your inferior "blue monkeys" race to kill every single one of human for destroying one single tree .

Other worse dialogues are :
-zero sadana : You dumb animal , because you made so much noise in the forest so I was forced to kill another dumb animal to save your life .

-sam worst thing : Quit you eternal b!tching , you dumb animal . Maybe you should just let me die , that way , I dont have to listen to your b!tching anymore .

Never in my life have I heard anyone quote any of those lines or scenes. Not among friends, not on Saturday Night Live, nowhere. Some of those lines.. I don't even know what the corresponding scene to those is.

But you tell someone "Remember that Joe Pesci scene from Goodfallas, you know the funny like a clown scene.."

Almost everyone knows that.

reply

Star Wars: "Luke, I am your father"
Stopped reading right there. Was that at the same time The Imperial March was thomping in the background...

reply

See, you may not even like Star Wars but 33 years later you still know the lines and music from Return of the Jedi. That illustrates my point exactly. We're barely 7 years removed from Avatar and what are we left with? The biggest box office of all time and no memories, no cultural impact.

reply

I love the first two star wars including the line and music you misplace.

But comparing the impact of series of movies to one is disingenuous. And like others have said avatar was a visual theatrical experience. It had the best legs of any movie this century for a reason people were/are in awe. The dialog was mediocre to crap and the story derivative. Just like the first star wars

reply

I agree Star Wars was far from perfect, even cringeworthy in spots. But why do the lines from that series have such staying power while nobody seems to quote Avatar?

reply

But why do the lines from that series have such staying power while nobody seems to quote Avatar?
For the third time: Series vs one film

And in any case, would anyone debate that SW is the biggest movie franchise? Or even arguably the biggest entertainment franchise overall? Noone would argue that Avatar, or ET, or Sound of Music, or any other single film anomaly is more remembered, more quoted (especially by fanboys like me) etc.

I don't rememremember a single line from ET or SoM off the top of my head either :)

reply

reply

I still think I'm right. No one can look past the CGI, the beautiful settings, the effectiveness of the 3D to fully appreciate Avatar for its story and humanity. Nothing is commonplace yet.

Except one or two lines like, "Where's my goddamn cigarette?"

reply

I don't rememremember a single line from ET or SoM off the top of my head either :)

I am old enough to remember how the line "ET phone home" was EVERYWHERE in the 1980's. It was quoted, spoofed, parodied endlessly for about a decade. That one line achieved pop culture status, which is what this thread is about.

reply

Speak for yourself. I am left with memories of the single most enjoyable time I have ever had at the box office, hands down. I went with a group of 6 the first time and we literally left the theatre speechless we were so in awe. And I remember the film just as well as any other film I have ever watched and I have watched it many more times on home theater. It doesnt have to have any super memorable one liners or quotes. I honestly couldn't care less about such things. Its the expereince as a whole and the story as whole that matters to me, not small bits of memorable dialogue and Avatar remains to this day this single best expereince I have ever had in the theater. In fact, nothing else has come close to matching it. It brought a new meaning to the word epic and blockbuster and shattered pretty much every record that existed.

So you go on believing that Avatar had no lasting effect on people because it didn't have any super memorable quotes. Even tho I consider that about as absurd of a premise as one could possible have in regards to films, that is your opinion and your entitled to it. The key here is YOUR opinion. You do not speak for some large percentage of the movie going public. You speak for yourself and nobody else and I for one disagree 100% with you. Again, Avatar is easily one of the most momorable films I have ever seen and the fact that there aren't any super memorable one liners or quotes doesn't change that one bit. In fact, its a testament to the film that it didn't need anything like that to be remembered. Avatar will be long remembered for other aspects of the film. Having super memorable one liners is not what dictates what is or isn't a succcessful or memorable film.

Did you really find this movie that amazing?

Really?

And the story? I guess you've never seen Fern Gully.

I think Titanic was a far superior movie.

Oh right, because Ferngully invented the environmental plot. Everyone born in 1992 knows it 

Yep, I really found the film that amazing. The only other film I can think of that can stand up to Avatar, in regards to the depth of the world created in the story, would be Lord of the Rings. The depth that went into the creation of just the world itself is nothing short of astonishing. The flora and fauna created are some of the most beautiful ever created on film. That made Pandora seem as real as planet Earth. Add to that a good story, breathtaking special effects, enjoyable characters, and a brilliant soundtrack and IMO, you easily have one of the best science fiction films I have ever seen.

What is it about people who dislike paticular films? They expect everyone else to hate it simply becasue they do. And if you don't hate it....well, then that just means you must have terrible taste in films because god knows, those people's subjective opinions are "right" and everyone who disagree's must be "wrong", even tho there is no right or wrong when it comes to subjectivity. In all honestly, thinking one's subjective opinion superior to others and more importantly, not respecting other people's subjecive opinions even if you happen to disagree with them....well, that is a childs mentaility.

As for your original post, so just because the people you know or hang around with don't bring up Avatar or can't remember the names of the characters in Avatar, that somehow means that nobody does? Do I even have to say just how ridiculous that assumption really is? I know that a lot of people on IMDB like to pretend they speak for a large segement of the population when they make posts, but that assumption is just so beyond absurd that its hard to believe anyone would actually say it. Tens of millions of people saw Avatar, yet your sitting here trying to suggest that you know the general populations overall level of recollection in regards to the film, lol. I hate to say this, but your living in la la land if you really believe that. The truth of the matter is you have absolutely NO CLUE what the average recollection is in regards to Avatar and the general population and to suggest otherwise is really laughable at best. I know I have absolutely no problem recalling the names of the major characters in the film and neither do many of the people I know that are fans of the film.

See? This post just proves my point. All people can see in Avatar right now is the cinematography / special effects. They can't see past Cameron's skills with cinematography.

At first I thought you were being satirical with this excuse, but it seems like you believe it. With regards to special effects and visuals, I would say that Terminator 2 and Alien were bigger wow factor moments in movies history than Avatar. Avatar mostly looked like a CGI cartoon.

reply

I can see past the visuals and special effects. In fact, it was the story and the characters that made me enjoy it at the level I did. Sure, the cinematography was great, but at least for me, that was ultimately just a small piece of what made the film so enjoyable. There have been a LOT of films that have had amazing cinemtography and amazing special effects that I ultimately wound up hating. It takes a lot more than special effects and cinematography for me to enjoy a film at the level I enjoyed Avatar, its as simple as that. Thats why I still love the movie even at home on a regular non 3D HDTV.

All this thread proves is that different people have different subjective opinions regarding Avatar. What a shock considering that is true for every film that has ever been made.

If you're such a fan, why are you attacking me? There's not a lot of fans left on this stupid board to defend this movie for the masterpiece that it is. I'm one of those few and you're trying to defend the a$$holes who are constantly putting us down for seeing what they can't see??

BTW, after drawing over 3000 storyboards for 3 separate films of my own, I'm highly knowledgeable and becoming more and more skilled in James Cameron's techniques. I know what I'm talking about when I say the average movie-goer doesn't know how much Cameron's skills will effect them. They may say that they're looking at the story and writing but did they ever stop to really think about what they're seeing in relation to reality? Cameron's skills make the unbelievable or unreal feel so convincing, no one questions the fact that they're looking at something that does exist or can exist. Yeah. You're attacking the story and character in Avatar, but look where it's coming from. No one had ever seen a film with aliens (cartoon aliens) before that were so convincing and realistic. Everyone had seen the human characters in Star Wars many times before, and heard their stories many times before. They are common.

reply

[deleted]

So my stating that I can see past the special effects and cinematography just fine somehow equates to me attacking you. Wow, do yourself a favor and grow some thicker skin. If you think that is attacking you than your going to think 99% of the posts on this board are attacks in one way or another.

Here are some more lines that I just remembered :

crazy army commander : The only good na'vian is a dead na'vian .

crazy army commander : I love the smell of burning tree in the morning. It smelled like victory . And the roasting blue monkeys inside the tree smell good too .

reply

Both lines are rip offs.

The first one is commonly adapted historical quote.

The second one is a rip off from Apocalypse Now's Lieutenant Bill Kilgore's "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" scene:

Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like
[sniffing, pondering]
Kilgore: victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0002961/quotes

Interesting you don't remember the "crazy commander's" name. I bet you know who Darth Vader, Hannibal Lecter and Freddy Kreuger are though.

reply

Neither of those are actual lines from the movie, the poster just made them up.

Same goes for the load of lines he posted further up.
