unclear on the concept


hopefully nobody attacks me for saying this, but was guru really practicing bad business? the subtitles made it unclear for me; i became confused when shyam was taking pictures of the chalk boxes....was it a set-up, or was he really cheating everyone? because then the big ending speech where he compares himself to gandhi kinda loses it's strength; yeah, he made it big, but he did it by cheating people.

this is why i need to keep working on my hindi...

I think the film's point was that this Gurukant Desai was a grey character. Not entirely good (like you usually see in films), or entirely bad. I interpreted him as a character who wanted to achieve a lot, with a good intention, and along the way deliberately chose to cheat as the country's narrow laws and corruption would otherwise not allowed him to grow as much as he wanted to. This just explains why he did it, but the film also raises the danger of doing that -- growing corruption. That's why I would say he is a grey character - not entirely good, not entirely bad.

i was confused about this aswell. exactly what crimes was he accused of?
