hold on

ok, so sybil was the recluse who died and they uncovered all her art work. she was know as shirley mason. as Gatorade_Girl_82 writes,

does that mean that sybil, the adult lady from the beginning, the one throughout the movie, that was just another personality of shirley mason???

Sybil was also a popular tv movie made back in the 70's starring Sally Field. They changed Shirley Mason's name to protect her identity. Shirley was the person the movie "sybil" was based on. Sybil wasn't one of her personalities.
