The whole point of her secret wasn't that she had 16 different personalities it was that Shirley Ardell Mason was in fact Sybil Dorsett and that the book, the original movie were about her!

The secret at the beginning of the movie was that in 1998 a recluse died. Her belongings were auctioned (she had no family). It was discovered that the recluse, Shirley Mason, was the person known as Sybil. Her true identity was revealed.

That part about her being a recluse was *beep!*, you know. She was an art teacher, a member of the local 7th Day Adv. church and a very known and liked member of the community. They just didn't know that she was "Sybil" (although a few of them suspected). Her paintings were exhibited locally, people would have seen them. I hate Hollywood when they do this -- act like it was some archaeological thing being unearthed from the tomb of the unknown pharoah. There's this woman on line that was one of her students and friends and has a website about what she was really like.

I'm all right, I'm alllll right!

Nice movie.
It came on twice, but it was at night and I was getting sleepy.

But I liked what I was able to watch and the acting was great.

Molly-31, I was just restating the opening credits to the movie. It really did say that. The opening scenes showed people discovering her secret stash of artwork done by the alters.

In news articles from the past decade since her death, they say lots about her that show she had friendships and a full life (church and art stuff). People did suspect she may have been Sybil, but that wasn't proven until after she died, Thus, it was a secret. I remember reading something a long time ago that she did reveal herself as the basis for the sybil book to an art student who had become a very close friend. But she really kept the multiple thing a secret until her death. Here is a good article http://www.aceweekly.com/Backissues_ACEWeekly/010802/cover_story010802.html

That was a nice article. I'm glad she found peace in her life and spent her life trying to lead a good life. I wonder if she ever forgave her mother. Probably, I don't think her mother was a bad person or evil. She was a mentally ill person who never received proper treatment. Back then, they would have just looked her in an asylum or institution and that would have been it and a lot of them were terrible. The father was very weak or afraid, I could never figure why he wasn't aware, but that can happen too.

She could paint real good too. I guess the story ended happy for her.
