Who else thinks this is one of the best films on the subject of rapist?

This film really surprised me. This is definitely one of the best films I´ve ever seen on the subject. The realism throughout the whole film was incredible and the way you are walked through the psychology of the character is absolutely amazing. There´s is just no way to predict which direction the film is going to take you in because you just don´t know what the main character is going to do. Wonderful film. I hope it gets the distribution it deserves despite it´s runtime.

Well, I found it pretty easy to predict which direction the film would take.

SPOILER (kind of):

These kinds of movies always follow the same trajectory - a moment of happiness, followed by a descent into even greater despair. I also saw the unhealthy father-daughter relationship coming from the first shot in the movie with Nettie in it. I actually saw exactly what *kind* of movie this was (what kind of subject matter it would handle and what kind of devices it would use) from the very first shot.

I agree that the film is realistic, for the most part, but I do think it was pretty predictable.

I also think this is an amazing film. I saw it in New York in March 20006 and have been thinking about it since! Its sincerity, it's amazing, yet very simple and subtle acting and direction (which it seems a lot of people consider it bland), had made Theo's struggle feel devastating to me and the end was absolutely beautiful. Brilliant, strong filmmaking. The director and the main actor came out after the screening for the Q&A and the audience was just sitting there, mute, not knowing what to ask... Very emotional experience to me. Hope miore films like this will come from him!

I think it is one of the best films on any subject.

Me. I watched this film in the film festival in April last year and I also kept thinking about it since then. I think this film is trully an amazing and remarkable film. To me, though the pace of the movie is rather slow, the film still made me feel intense. The main actors are also very convincing. Good acting!!!

I know you asked this question 7 years ago (!), but it is still the best movie on the subject of rape, sexual violence and abuse.

This made Irreversible seem PG-13; it really engages your emotions.

I don't recall any good movie that deals with this special topic and so it probably is the best movie of this kind for me although Irreversible also deals with a rape and that is my 3rd favorite movie ever but concerning the story it's something completeley different...

Not one of the best. Simply THE best (imho)!
Puts Irreversible to childish shame ;)

I think, therefore you are.

I like your question, but we could elevate this discussion beyond the subject of sexual violation. DER FREIE WILLE is a perfect film, one of the only truly perfect films.

The fact that this masterpiece hasn't yet been recognized as such is no evidence against its perfection.

Aesthetically, the film is perfect, but, much like the aesthetically perfect poem "Leda and the Swan" by W.B. Yeats, it seems to evoke meanings that are ethically reprehensible.

I wholly agree, this film is perfect.
