I think I missed the part where Mei leaves the herd, why did he abandon them?
The last part I saw before he and Garu left to cross the mountain was the herd confronting him about his friendship and that not being there way

I like to know if it was just me, as in am I reading this into the movie or was there some serious Ho Yay going on

I'd like to think there wasn't as that ruins a major part of the movie for me as well as almost completely changing the message

Both Mei and Gabu's groups convince each of them to "pretend" to be friends and extract information from the other. Mei and Gabu meet (with both of their groups secretly watching) but neither can go through with it, confess and decide to jump into a raging river to escape and be together.

As for the Ho Yay, I don't know what to tell you. I have no problem with Gabu and Mei possibly being lovers, but I don't know that they are. I honestly do *not* see it as a big deal whether they have a romantic/sexual relationship. Why does it bother you?

reply

Because it cheapens their friendship and sends the message that two wildly different guys CAN'T be friends UNLESS their gay.

If they're not gay then this is a movie about the triumph of friendship.

If they are gay then its one more movie about how gays are not accepted and should be persecuted, the only way you can find happiness as a gay person is if you abandon everyone and everything you know.

Sorry, I just don't see how that follows. They're rejected by their clans because they're a goat and a wolf. Anything else is secondary. If they are gay then I guess it's a "nice to think about" kind of thing (for some people) but it doesn't drive the plot.

You know, characters can be gay *without* it being the main source of conflict.

*sighs* Idiots who invent Ho Yay like the ones at TV Tropes are just so corrupted from watching too much yaoi, porn, and other gay stuff that they will see whatever they want to see. Doesn't necessarily mean it's even there. I just watched this and there's really nothing "gay" about it. Mei and Gabu call each other "best friends", most importantly they don't blush around each other or hint that they desire each other in a sexual way. They go through obstacles lovers go through in other movies, sure, but ever see Milo and Otis?
It's the same story, pretty much. It's just about two souls who feel close to each other. You could substitute any pair: sister/brother, parent/child and friend/friend.

And I agree with you; making them "gay" just cheapens the whole thing. But leave it to the Furry fanbase to be pervs and take anything, even the slightest hint with "friendship" and blow it completely out of proportion. >_> And they will do this with everything and anything. Perfect example is the new My Little Pony series, an innocent girl's show about six female ponies being friends.
What does the Furry Fanbase do?
MAKE THEM ALL LESBIANS WITH EACH OTHER BECAUSE "THAT'S HOT".
