Car Chase?

Not the greatest film ever by any means, but does anyone agree that the muted, rain soaked POV car chase was a really nice idea, really well executed?

reply

YES. One of the most powerful scenes I have seen in a film for a LONG time. Really made me feel strange watching that scene. It conveyed the fear the characters were feeling exceptionally well.

Totally agree - and it reminded me of a scene in Mendes' Road To Perdition, also in the rain and muted, bringing death and emotion with it. Two very powerful moments.

I loved the rain sequence and the fact the camera was in the car as it was moving the whole time.

Yeah I agree, it was a great scene. The rain did loads for the atmosphere and tension.

Spectacular scene. I felt like it was my own dad up ahead. It was perfect timing for that scene too - I knew as soon as the father said that he'd protect Bobby something would go amiss, but I didn't think he would be the one taken out. Their relationship was just starting to reform and then it was ripped away. This was the peak of the movie for me.

i agree.

we always see car chases in the movies, but how many of them take place in the rain? think about it.

the rain-soaked car chase brought with it a certain level of realism... the weather is not always lovely when *beep* goes down. :)

I'd have to put the chase from Bullit first, followed by The French Connection. This is a good one, though, so I'll put it as third on my list of all time great car chase scenes. Well done and suspenseful. Great sound.

Easily the best scene in the movie, it moved me so much. I think I was genuinely tensed up because of it and felt like I was there.

Wow, I was just thinking about this scene. I will be presenting it to my classmates in my sound design class later this year. Overall the sound design for the film was great. The story, unfortunately, did not sit with me well cause I can't accept Mark Wahlberg's character getting crippled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at a crucial time during the final scene of the movie. But I don't want to derail the thread.

That car chase scene alone deserves as much recognition as possible for great work!

Not at all. If anything it was underwhelming. I mean, I didn't 'dislike it' but I don't consider this scene to be excellent by any means. Ever seen death proof? Now, THAT is a car chase.

However, the style in which it was shot was indeed fitting for this particular film with its non-flashy realistic vibe. And of course, experiencing it through the eyes of Bobby was really cool.

If you watch that scene again, you'll see Bobby press the accelerator, but let off to avoid wrecking. He was trying to run the gunmen off the road.
