Mark Wahlberg actually good in this movie.

Almost every movie I've seen Mr. Wahlberg in, he's got the same punk attitude, overacting and puffing out his chest.Like this supposed tough guy persona. And his performance doesn't really change through movies. In WE OWN THE NIGHT he actually shows that he's got some acting chops. Something I didn't think was possible. Yes he starts out the same In your face tough guy that we've seen in everything from Boogie Nights to Four Brothers and Max Payne, and a slew of other movies. The difference here is that he's able to portray change in his character in the face of personal tragedy. He plays down his usual Marky Mark style,to portray the sheer terror he feels out in the field, returning to the job after being shot. He's not overacting, the chacracter he plays has lost his self-confidence,and this is conveyed convincingly. At the end ceremony, when he says I love you to Joaquin Phoenix he's convinced me he means it. That's the sort of transformation I like to see.

He's good in it because he doesn't have much screen time.

Indeed. Great work by Wahlberg in this film.

I always enjoy him, not only in WotN but also Departed, 2 Guns, The Other Guys, Boogie Nights, the Fighter, Ted and Pain & Gain. Even though Broken City and Contraband were not masterpieces they were enjoyable because of him in it.

That was real? I saw that movie, I thought it was bullsh*t

Departed was a good movie, I'll grant you that, but not because of Wahlberg, but because of the other excellent actors in it. He did his usual confrontational tough guy schtick. But considering he had so limited screentime in that,he didn't really get a chance to shine either. The Other Guys i thought was horrible. The Fighter, Pain&Gain,Broken City and Contraband I haven't seen yet. I aim to watch Ted, because I have a feeling that Teddy Bear is hilarious.

yeah he sure has his best performances when he can play the tough guy or a dumbbell! Just saw Lone Survivor, not really my type of movie but entertaining enough.

Take a look at the robbery scene in Boogie Nights. There is a segment where the camera focuses on Wahlberg while he is sitting on the couch, just staring. He does something very subtle with his eyes and face in that scene. He's so good in that scene that you can practically read his mind.

I say the guy's good when he has a chance to be. Certainly did fine in this one, and in Grey's earlier 'The Yards'. Decent direction and editing can make all the difference.
