Why would Phoenix agree to do this piece of crap?

I can understand why Wahlberg would do crap but I thought Phoenix had better sense.

I know this three years later and all but here I go.

1) I don't think this is a bad film, in fact the last twenty years of cop films this is among the best. It has the gritty 1970's feel of a French Connection with stellar performances from all its leads, a compelling arc for the brothers and two really great action sequences that actually have consequence to the narrative.

2) Joaquin will probably do any movie with this director. They're obviously friends, work well together and have similar tastes.

3) every once in a great while Whalberg does a great movie. Yes he does a lot of cash grabs, lame action movies, and big spectacles but he'll also do a Boogie Nights, or The Fighter.

4) this film is under appreciated for what it is. It's an honest portrayal of family and the criminal underworld and I'd rank it in my top five for Joaquin
