The curse...

If I recall correctly, no matter who watched the video they died. It wasn't a "tag your it" kind of thing like in "It Follows". I have not seen this yet but am about to and reviews have lead me to believe that key tenet has been altered so the gf of the guy cursed can save him by watching the video. As stated, it didn't matter how many or in what order before.

No. It was set-up at the end of The Ring that the only reason Rachel survived was because she copied the tape and showed it to Noah.

Thanks.

This is interesting though. Another user posted this on the original film's board:

In the book the tape starts out with a message commanding the viewer to watch until the end and ends with a message telling the viewer how to save themselves - it's literally a virus that wants to reproduce, just showing it to someone else isn't exactly reproduction.

As an aside, in the books the kids erase the ending as a joke (so the message is just "If you do not want to die, you must -" and then it cuts to commercial). Eventually it turns out that doing that altered the viruses DNA so that each copy still spreads the virus but copying it/showing it to someone else no longer saves you, in a twist it turns out that the reporter protagonist lived because he made a record of his investigation - his report became a new outlet for the virus.

I understand that in the Japanese original series the video curse becomes a virus and takes on a life of it's own. I only saw the first "Ringu" and it wasn't at the level yet but as the series went on (they made many many sequels and even a TV mini-series I read) it became a viral infection more than anything else. But in the latest Japanese film which pits the "Ring" girl against the blue girl in "The Grudge" it's back to an old VHS tape. (Not a bad film actually. Saw it with subtitles. Clever how they were able to mix both together).

Rachel wasn't "safe" until Aidan watched her copy. Noah watched the "original" tape.

I thought Aidan and Noah both watched the copy.

They did, but when Noah watched the copy, he already seen the other tape and then asked Rachel to make him a copy.
