4/10. Here's why:


While FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS combined flashbacks from the battlefield with scenes on the U.S., IōJIMA KARA NO TEGAMI is told mostly in chronological order, which gives it a worse pacing than its companion piece. Once again, it has too many clichés to tell it apart from other war movies and, once again, the acting and the sympathetic characters make it watchable. Just because there were no survivors in real life, doesn't mean that the movie couldn't have an epilogue. FLAGS had one. That ruined the ending for me.

yeah man, the epilogue should've been the glorious ken watanabe's spirit ascending to the sun, and then turn the shot of the sun into the japanese flag. so awesome not.
