At the very least, they could have released a dubbed version.
It really takes a lot away from the movie when you are staring at the bottom of the screen the whole time instead of looking at the visuals.

Most people prefer that foreign language films be presented in their original language with sub-titles.
shareYou get used to subtitles quite easily. And I think original languages should be kept every time. If a film depict Japanese people, they should speak Japanese unless there's a intra-story reason for them to speak something else.

The sub titles bothered me at first, but I got used to them pretty quickly.
Also, there were several parts in the movie when Japanese soldiers came into close contact with American soldiers. It would ruin parts of the story and make no logical sense if every soldier from Japan spoke english instead of Japanese.
I thought having virtually all of the movie in Japanese worked well with this film since it was showing the other side of the war.

I am GLAD they used subtitles in Letters From Iwo Jima.
However, this movie was not exactly a foreign film as much as it was a film shot in a foreign language.
Either way, subtitles was the best way to go.
Remember, America is a rather spacious country. Not all of us are alike.
Jesus... Why should have a movie shot in Japan, telling a story about japanese soldiers, mainly from a japanese prospective been shot in english???? There are other countries, languages and civilizations except the american in this world.. As a result, there are movies in other languages too. It's simple. I have really nothing against usa but some people (of course not all of them) cannot watch a movie like this -which is a masterpiece- and are always complaining without even a reason.....

I like that the Japanese talked Japanese. Another movie I'm glad I saw in the original language with subtitles was 'Das Boot'. The English version just didn't get across the mannerisms or feelings of a real German U-boat commander nearly as well as hearing it in the German. The English dub was really watered down. One particular scene I remember was when the boat was sinking and everyone was nearly panicked and the Captain ordered (In German) I WANT BONA FIDE DAMAGE REPORTS! which is what you would expect a German WWII officer to say. The English doesn't get this across at all.
