It's just opened in Toronto at the Bloor Cinema and later the Revue, and has received solid reviews in the local papers.

I had wanted to see it at the InsideOut Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in the spring, but missed it--and then CNR died soon afterwards. D'oh! I'm glad it's getting a commercial run (albeit in rep theatres). I'm looking forward to seeing this film!

Hey Canmark... I am going to be at the Bloor tonight for the late screening doing a Q&A afterwards. Should be fun, if you can make it.

Alas, I work till 6pm, so couldn't see the Friday screening with Q&A. I went to the Sunday afternoon screening, but missed the first 5 minutes or so. But what a life! CNR's family, the things that happened in his life... so much more than Match Game. Who would have believed it? And so funny!

What happened in the Q&A, barry-186? Any interesting questions/answers?

reply

The Q&A on Friday and Saturday in Toronto, as well as the Q&A on Sunday and Monday in Washington DC were all really good. Lots of good questions. Lots of positive feedback. People really seem to like the movie. The only complaint somepeople seem express is that they wish it was longer, and depending upon their tastes, they wish there was more about 1) CNR's TV career; 2) CNR's personal life; 3) The theater / Opera; or 4) CNR's Teaching. I am taking it as a compliment that nobody ever says it is too long! And encouraging people to wait for the DVD extras and have a ball...

Glad you liked the movie.

Seeing as I missed the Q&A, can I ask some questions now?

When/where did CNR perform this stage play? Did it tour? And what was the critical/audience response at the time?

While you did have a few "man on the street" interviews, did you ever consider interviews with some of the people mentioned in the show? Celebrities like Burt Reynolds, or perhaps some of his acting students?

Are any of CNR's father's movie posters still around... on the Internet, perhaps, where one could see them?

reply

Absolutley! The IMDB Q&A begins now:

1. CNR performed his play mainly in 2001. He developed it in 2000 and pretty much retired it in 2002. We talked him into taking it out of mothballs for the film "one last time".

2. We interviewed Burt, Dom Deluise and Stiller and Meara for the DVD so far, and are doing more soon. You can see some excerpts from these on the myCNRstory section of our website at www.charlesnelsonreilly.com. The direct link is at:

I think we have Burt and Anne and Jerry online so far. A whole bunch of his students will be posting soon.

3. I haven't been able to find any of CNR's dad's posters, but if you do, let me know. I would love to get The Scarlett Empress.

Just the other day there was a documentary about Jerry Herman on PBS... and there was Charles Nelson Reilly, raconteur that he is, telling tales about Mr. Herman in his own inimitable way. CNR was in the original Broadway casts of Herman's Hello Dolly! and Parade. It must have been great to see him live on stage.

i absolutely LOVED this movie and have been telling anyone who will listen about it. even though i grew up with the nyc stage at my door, like so many people i thought of charles nelson reilly as "that match game guy". this show was everything you'd want it to be...funny, poignant, endearing and most of all entertaining. if you ever find pictures of his dad's art work online please post a link. i'm sure anyone who loved this show would love to see it as much as i would.
thank you so much for putting this movie out there. like many others i'm sure, i can't wait to see the dvd and the extras that it might include. it reminds me of why i used to go to the theater regularly and makes me miss that intimate experience even more.
