What time period does this story take place in? Judging by the settings and the way the characters dressed, esp. the soldiers' uniforms, my guess was during the first world war, but a friend watching with me thought it was set during the Civil War.
shareJust saw it this evening. It was difficult to place at first, because the costumes were a little all over the place: whether that's just because the rural area was meant to be behind the times in terms of fashion, or whether something was lacking in the costume department, I don't know.
Anyway, I'm definitely guessing 1917: end of WWI, yes. Definitely *not* Civil War. :)
Absolutely right! The uniforms tell the date! BTW, this movie has had some very nice reviews lately.. Too little, too late! Dropped too early to DVD.. With no promotion!! A shame.. This is the kind of uplifting story this country needs :)
shareAnother question I had was: location? Since it is a UK production with mostly UK actors, I expected it to be set in the UK. And it's vague about the location... "Where are you from?" "The city." could be almost anywhere...
But then I noticed the accents. Quite American-seeming. (There is a dialog coach in the credits, who is presumably responsible for getting everyone to talk the same.) Then I was thinking they had done that to make it seem generic, for better world-wide distribution.
But no. It is set in America. The kids collect baseball cards, and (at least in 1917) that would be only in America. And I suppose with the right knowledge you could also tell from the army uniforms.
the film is set in New England (U.S.) however the whole film was shot on a sound stage. this i found out by asking the director, because it looked so realistic i asked the same question you did. it surprised me that it was filmed on a sound stage.
shareThe movie is set during WWI, but the costumes ranged from the 1850s to the 1920s or 1930s. Definitely the worst costume design I've seen in any period film.
shareI think that the only time American soldiers wore the bandaged puttee army boots would be in 1917/1918 period. Previously they were only used in India.
