is it me or are there lots of refrences to spirited away in this movie? e.g holding her breath as she crosses the bridge and her hands starting to fade away aswell.

They definatley have a very similiar feel movie-wise.

Is it me or just modern society?

I had the exact same feeling. She is "on the other side", on a rather spiritual world, she needs to come back but doesn't know how or can't, and so on. It also reminded me a bit of Mirrormask. I can't point my finger towards a specific element, but there certainly is something there.
