Coeur
If it weren't for that gang of magnificent actors and Resnais'direction, the film would not be really worth seeing. We are not asked to believe that this is anything but a sort of fairy tale vaguely set in a Paris on which it perpetualy snows.
Arditi, as a lonely and frightened barman tortured by a loony father who once deserted his family, is faultless. Dussolier, the even more lonely single real estate dealer, also has a meaty role but perhaps overplays it a little. Azema - who is, I think, Resnais's companion - plays a fervent Catholic believer with as much energy as anyone could but the role is, at least for her, totally unbelievable. Lambert Wilson, playing the caricature of army officer discharged for unknown reasons, is painfully credible. Laura Morante plays the only character capable of taking a decision. Alas it is the wrong one. All in all, these old time actors seem to be having a ball in a narrative that hardly exists and one never quite knows what Resnais is trying to do with them, sad sacks all. Yet I enjoyed this film in spite of its absense of focus. I suppose the fun also lies in the artificiallity of the proposal, including the set and lighting.
A good film but not to be taken seriously.
