Question about the '3 Iron' scenes on the computer *spoilers*

I was wondering, was there a specific reason for having the scenes from 3 Iron feature in this movie as well? Was it to show an indirect link (a particular theme perhaps) between the two movies and if so, what was the link? I understand that Kim Ki Duk's movies aren't really big budget affairs, so was it just an economical decision then, to re-use footage from past movies to indicate the profession/artistic leanings of the male lead? Then again, if that was the case why choose 3 Iron and not just any scenes from his older movies?

So far, the reviews I've read have not indicated any specific link to 3 Iron other than that it's written and directed by the same person. If you've read anything on this or if you've got your own views, let me know. :)

[Anyway, since we're on the subject of these 2 movies, I enjoyed 3 Iron better even though this subject matter was a lot more interesting to me. I felt that this movie had a very interesting premise, but after a while the girl's obsessive self-destructive tendencies became rather hard to bear and she didn't have me rooting for her in the end. I would have liked it if the now surgically-enhanced couple finally met some time after their non-fatal chase sequence and resolved to pursue their relationship anyway, with the girl's character taking on a(n) (admittedly convenient) redemption arc and realising that having a new face doesn't necessarily change the person inside. (cliche, i know, but let's just allow that for this one) Seeing as she didn't make that realisation in the end, I guess the boyfriend-dies-in-the end outcome was quite a fitting and poetic end, parallel to her character flaw.]

I saw 3-Iron yesterday and Time today.
(I thought 3-Iron was better too.)
And I did find certain similarities.

One somewhat insignificant, yet very obvious: the ball. In 3-Iron it's a golf ball and in Time it's a football (soccer ball if you're American) they pass back in forth.

In Time, when the New Her meets him, I would think that as they talk he would figure out who she is - things she likes, her tastes and preferences, but I guess they don't talk about each other that much (words are useless in 3-Iron). And I kept waiting for her to bite him.

(That's all for now. I have to go. More late, maybe.)

For some reason I don't remember seeing a football in Time. I tend to forget some of the things in the movies I watched. Bad memory basically. Which scene was it?

I also thought that after they spoke, he'd start spotting bits of his ex in the New Her, but I guess maybe he was distracted during the relationship or they didn't talk about that stuff (which I find strange). Haha... I never thought of the biting thing! I think part of why she didn't do it was because she lost a bit of her old self along with her original face. She'd adapted to this idea of the new person she could be, but at the core she still remained insecure about herself...if that makes sense.

On the ferry, there's a kid that's playing with the ball, and they start kicking it between them, the kid running back and forth, until she "disappears" on him.

Wasn't he a film editor? I thought he was editing 3-Iron.

reply

haha yeah probably he was a film editor ,and the mac was probably what Kim Ki Duk or his editor used to edit Kim's films lol

reply

Well there was other reference to past Ki-duk work. The poster in Ji-woo's room is for "Wild Animals" second director's film

reply

He was editing Bin Jip, on a mac with a program called final cut pro, the industry standard for editing films. That and avid. He also had a huge dvd collection so i assumed it was kim ki duks editor or something.

Maybe he was inspired by one of his editors and wrote this script? Thats what i thought.

I'm sure with auteur theory and all we could draw a lot of parallels between 3-Iron and Time, but I would guess it's primarily just a snarky moment of self-promotion, as another poster pointed out the, um, poster on a character's wall for another Kim film. If anyone saw Satoshi Kon's latest, Paprika, near the end there are billboards for many of his past films. Just a little, private, subtle yuk yuk moment.

reply

Or Maybe Kim Ki-duk thought it'd be cool to throw in hints of his other films into this film. Simple as.

Genghis Khan: Enslaver of Nations!

If I remember correctly, those are the first and last shots of 3 Iron - the Venus statue behind the golf net and the couple on the scale she rigged to read zero - or without any weight.
