It seems like after making several commercially successful films, these auteur directors need to let off some steam and make something that comes straight from the gut - for better or worse. It's like a cleansing of their palette before they move off in a new direction in their future films. Both Takeshi Kitano and Miike and Kelvin Tong's Love Story are very similar in this respect. But it's tough on the audience. It's like watching regurgitation.

Yeah, sure.. but... This film is awful. Takeshis was amazing.
Miike's a hack. I like him.. some of his films are great.. Takeshi Kitano is a genius.
Also, Miike ripped off Sonatine with Dead or Alive 2...
Think this might be the first time I've ever seen anyone call Takashi Miike a hack. The man is a master of the craft; his ability to transition between genre is unrivalled.
