maybe you and I have different versions of the dvd. on mine, it does not show character names throughout, but only shows character names when more than two characters are involved in a dialog, and at least two of them are offscreen. I think it's good to know which offscreen character is speaking
the picture space taken up by the subtitles is a side effect of using a widescreen display, which has a tiny, if any, letterbox. without that black bar for the subs to partly occupy, they have to take up image space. the subs on my DVD could be a little bit lower, though they are setup to be at an optimal height on a 4:3 display, and looks "normal" when played in 4:3 mode (perhaps not the best choice, but clearly there was some thought behind it).
the simple truth is that with widescreen displays comes subtitles occupying more image space than we from the old days of 4:3 screens are used to, especially when watching movies in formats of 1.85:1 or more narrow. the 2.35:1 movies still have that letterbox space for the subs to "cheat" into
most of the subs on my dvd are shown one line at a time, so it's really not a big deal, as one line takes up very little space
the one thing I would change is to have two subtitle tracks, one for normal subs, and one for hard-of-hearing subs, as I don't need to see [rock music plays]
