Vicky should have faced the consequences...

Would have been nice for Doug to find out what she was up to and call her out for being the total phony that she is.

You did just fine, Clarence. Now go git yo'self some hot cornbread!

reply

She wasn't a phony, she was still learning about herself.

Doug didn't empathize with her and recognise the changes that the audience could see. If he'd confronted her, I'm sure her character wouldn't have lied.

Ultimately on certain occasions some things are better left unsaid and people are entitled to their privacy.EG Judy

If you don't start undressing me soon this is going to turn into a panel discussion.

It was a life lesson she had to learn. Had nothing to do with Doug.

Americans and their obsession with "cheating" lol

reply

Hopefully you're future husband or wife cheats on you and explains it was just a life lesson, nothing to do with you.

While I agree that it wasn't right she got off scot free, I also believe it makes the story more realistic. They spent a summer in Barcelona, she had an affair, then went back to her fiancee. There was no climax, no fight, no fallout. It was like she was coming back to real life when going back to the US and left everything that happened in BCN, behind. Most people have affairs without their significant other finding out.

Most people have affairs without their signifiant other finding out?

Truly charming, isn't it?

I find her character truly irritating. A pseudo intellectual blowhard who thinks she knows it all but is nothing more than a hypocrite. And then blows it off as "finding herself."

Could be. Yet funny how many women will accept it as being a woman "finding herself."
But a man does the same thing and he's a pig.

she didn't get off scot-free. she has to live with her guilt and her crushing doubt and her own cowardice

I think the movie tried to show that Vicky was enamored with the more free spirited life style of her friend Christina. That she had always been the onlookker to Christina's life, hearing all the details, but maybe not understanding why Christina always ended up ultimately unhappy and disastified.

One bite of the apple and Vicky was in the same boat. The movie started with her smiling, confident and happy. It ended with her disastified, unsure and scowling. I don't think her husband is so oblivious that he won't eventually notice the change.

in an ideal world yes

so many movies, so little time

It would have been nice, but this movie isn't really a morality tale where the wrongdoer always gets punished for their actions like in a telenovela. She got away with, has to live with this secret for the rest of her life, and her decision to go back to her real life where she'll probably end up like Patricia Clarkson's character. There's nothing really admirable in it, but that's life. This movie had a real detached view on these pretentious people acting upon their passions (or not acting upon them) and had some low-key commentary while at the same time not treating these characters with contempt.

Hear, hear. I also find it strange to judge a movie character, male or female. When I watch Cassanova, I'm not thinking what a scumbag he is, even if I found him to be so in real life.
