What the heck just happened?!

Okay, I'll limit it to a couple of questions because I'm pretty sure this movie dropped the ball and it isn't just me. It was beautifully filmed, and the murder scenes/art were awesome, but not enough to carry the plot.

1. Did I miss where Stan says WHY he feels so guilty about Crystal? I thought for a sec maybe she was his daughter, but it seemed like Sandy was hitting on him. Why would a detective be friends with a couple of cracked out prostitute roommates? I mean, wouldn't he feel guilty about EVERYONE "working" down by the docks?

2. Why was the original killer named Big Eddie? That's a TERRIBLE serial killer name. Did I miss something?

3. What kind of college class has actual crime scene pictures explained as though it's Art History?

4. Okay - obviously Stan wasn't abducted by aliens at the end ... but that is exactly what it looked like.

5. More of a comment - Willem Dafoe needed some dialogue. That was ridiculous. There is no way a man incapable of holding a simple conversation with his superiors and "partner" would get a big promotion as a police detective. Also it was very annoying to watch him ignore people for 90 minutes.

Only can answer 1. Crystal was a undercover cop. That is why he felt guilty. He never told her that the killer was working the waterfront where she was doing her undercover work at.

reply

Ohhh ... okay. I must have missed that. So Sandy was really a prostitute & she found out Crystal was a cop after her murder?

Not even sure about Sandy and Crystals relationship. Why was Crystal getting blood transfusions?

reply

Sandy was GIVING not getting blood. Remember she asked the nurse if she could choose who got it. But I guess I missed the part about Crystal being an undercover cop. And why did they call the serial killer Uncle Eddie?

reply

Oh the movie was so confusing I missed that. Good question. Why would any serial killer be called that. Maybe that is the name he gave himself.

It was such a beautiful movie and so much attention was paid to the art. It actually makes me a little mad that the plot was full of gaping holes. Ridiculous, I know! I was waiting for some great revelation to tie everything together. I totally missed where Crystal was an undercover cop. The killer was never revealed to be Big Eddie (world's least threatening name btw) OR a copy cat. However, whomever it was must have been psychic, and had a ton of time on his hands. It was more frustrating than thought-provoking!

I think it was the same killer. The art was interesting. And I liked his friend who owned the art gallery. I think he was a interesting character. For a second I thought he was the killer.

But the movie reminded me of a Law and Order CI. The killer was emulating some other artist and was killing women and posing them like the pictures the acclaimed artist took. Weird just like this movie but less confusing. I just think the director got caught up in trying to be cerebral and clever and it was a mess.

Thanks for asking. I saw it last night and has just about the same questions and comments.

Very well said; I fully agree with you

That was funny about 'Big Eddie'; actually, I THINK it was 'Uncle Eddie', but still same point. REAL scary sounding

And I PASSIONATELY agree with you on point number 5! I couldn't believe that the director or whoever had him come across like that. I thought that was just about THE worst performance EVER by Willem Dafoe. You hit it right on the proverbial nose, my friend! He just wandered around starring blankly and acting VERY stupid. Poor, POOR job there mate that sucked some SERIOUS Donkey@ss!

I absolutely HATED the way the director handled the 'Drama' in the film; it stood in start contrast to the excellent mood and visuals...

I have over 4000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!

Willem Dafoe was the killer....I thought that was beyond obvious,he was schizo as shown in his last scene dying when we saw his two split-personalities struggle and scream.

When he asked the neighbor about all the noise in his apartment and she said there as no one up there...that was the red flag.
