can i just ask something?

What is it with America (and possibly the world's) fascination with these awards? Certainly, it has not become a matter of who should win, but rather developed into an obsession with whom we (the public) think a group of "elites" (Hollywood) will pick? Why do people care so much who wins this certain award? Most of are fascinated by celebrity and thus, I think this is where our curiousity arises. Regardless of your politics, I'd like to hear some feedback from others.

Its just something to look forward to and its a chance to see actors, actresses, directors and producers rewarded for the work they have done.

Love can touch us one time and last for a lifetime

It's Hollywood's most glamourous night. It's important because it recognizes what "good" acting is (or usually is) as well as what it means to be good at your craft. It's nice to see celebrities all dressed up to honor their peers. It's just a fun night to kick back and enjoy yourself.

I just watched it for Jon Stewart. He is God imo.

The Acadamy is recognized by the public for frequently noticing good movie making and this is the night that they come out with their decisions as to who did the best in any given field. Also, there are people like myself who have found that the movies we like tend to be the ones that win acadamy awards.

Because websites offer printable nominee sheets?

Because it gives people something to talk about in the office the next day?

Other than that, I got nothin'. ^^

I'm maybe in a different place. I like all the glitz and glamour. So pretty and shiny.

But, I'm also an actor. I enjoy it because I can appreciate the honor. I can appreciate the sentiment. I can appreciate the status. To win this most prestigious award says that you've made it. Does that make sense? I don't know how to put it into words. I'm reading what I wrote, and it's not right. I just know that I look forward to being there when I'm at that point, because that will be a statement of industry recognition.

Again, the words are wrong. Oh, well

Your words are fine. We understand perfectly.

And good luck working toward your goal!

Because they do. We've tried to explain, it's obvious no answer will be what you're looking for. ^^

as an actor you should know darn well that oscars is about politics. WHoever sells himself the most at the cocktail parties and preview screening for academy members, special screening and parties held to further talk about your film, your performance, explain to as many academy voters why it is they should appreciate your role by describing the complexity and intent of it,doing all you can, even making deals to star in that producers or directors next film, even for cheap,if he prefers you etc, even that is done. its a pitch,it is selling oneself, politics, that is who usually wins, the one who garners most votes, and many of such votes are gotten this way as well.

As an actor, you should know better.

Americans are obsessed with competition, and with winning. Even though the nominees don't necessarily feel that they are in competition with each other (I don't imagine Dolly Parton had ever heard of 3-6 Mafia), people like the competition of it all. They like to be able to say, "I knew he would win". They like to be able to call the Academy idiots if the movie they like doesn't win, because naturally they know more than the academy. But most of all, they like the winning and losing of it. Kind of like America's obsession with sports. Notice how in the last few years, college football and pro hockey in the US have both done away with the "tie". Now they go into as many overtimes as necessary to see that someone wins, and that someone loses.

Plus, women like to see George Clooney in a tux, and guys like to see Jessica Alba in an evening gown.

This is my opinion.

He made me sit in front of a plateful of yams for a good thirty, thirty-five minutes.

It's simple. Society is obsessed with Hollywood. Hollywood deems the Oscars to be important. Therefore society thinks the Oscars are important.

Hollywood is overrated. Granted there are many great films made by Hollywood but that's not the extend of where good films come from. There are many independent films that could easily be considered better than many Hollywood films. The same goes for foreign (ie. not American) films. There are other national film awards that are just as important. People just need to look outside the box.

Just say NO to censorship!

for teh past couple of years me and some friends have actually turned the academy awards into a night of betting and beer. Quite fun. But i do agree
that this award really doesnt mean much,i mean i spose if you personally won
it, you might have a different story.

But techniqually if you bet on actors performances, that makes them in the
same league as racehorses. coincidence?

you dont know heat until youve spent several hours inside a giant condom

its the apex of awards! you're up on stage in front of all of hollywood, and millions of people at home. thats pretty incredible!! and anyway you get a lot of fame, fortune, and honor if/when you win the award. not to mention you'll be called "oscar winning your name" from now on... makes you feel like you're important you know. like a president or a doctor...

I think the quality has been slipping in the last few years, although I do still watch it for the glitz and glamour. But for the awards themselves, I feel that it's losing is prestige, and I don't think that winning an Oscar these days is as prestigious as it was in years gone by. It's like they hand it out to anyone these days.

Traditionally, they say that when you win an Oscar your career it set, but just look at recent winners, some of them continue to give real mediochre performances.
