We need to get out of oil, ANYWAY!

Regardless of what you think of the issue, we should transition out of that resource, ANYWAY, because we don't know how much of that supply of oil we have and we need to cut off dependence of the Middle East to make the world a safer place. So Al Gore is right, the debate is over (for different reasons).

Doctor Who was saying pretty much the same thing back in the 1970s:

The Doctor: It's about time the people who run this planet of yours realised that to be dependent on a mineral slime just doesn't make sense.
Can't argue with that.

and we are nearly one percent of the way there.

Look at the price of oil drop. We have plenty of it and new technology is discovering more and more. Eventually we may need to transition to a different energy source (perhaps nuclear will be safer by then), but there's no reason that we need to do it today. If oil truly becomes scarce, we will naturally transition away from it. We're not doing that because oil is nowhere near scarce. And the government will not help by regulating or forcing the change; they'll only make things less efficient and more bogged down in bureaucracy and mismanagement as they always do.

Regarding the Middle East, we just need to stop giving all sides weapons to make the world a safer place. But I don't think our government wants to do that. War is profitable and perhaps even necessary for the economy. And "terrorism" is a good boogie-man to keep people in line, afraid/hateful of one another, and to make them complacent with giving up their freedoms and accepting a police state growing up around them.

the only thing worse is to have only the bad guys armed.

People in the Middle East possessing some guns and jeeps pose zero threat to us. Their war would fizzle out if we left them alone and stopped adding fuel to the fire.

But our government will be happy to continue escalating the fighting over there as long as we can. How many countries have we invaded now and left in chaos, under false pretenses or to overthrow a leader that we didn't like? It's getting to be too many to remember.

If there are "bad guys", we are most likely them, in my opinion. We use this war as a giant social distraction and economic machine. As long as people like you can comfortably believe that there are "bad guys" over there that need to be killed, you'll let the government get away with anything they claim is necessary to defend you from those "bad guys" and you'll be too distracted to hold them accountable for other things.

Yes it does not look like we're going to run tomorrow but we don't know for sure how oil there is so we got it do NOW just so we do not get into that shortage scenario.

Yes we should stop giving weapons to them but in the longer term we should try to BOYCOTT their oil should the Arabs can be poorer and therefore not be able to afford any weapons. So, they would be WORKING for their wealth and not be praying five times a day or whatever.
