Arguing about global warming seems to be a lot of fun

I know people like to argue about things in general, but for some reason global warming seems to be the issue that stirs up a lot of heat. (No pun intended.)

Sometimes I like to look at the slanging matches that happen on the Politics board, and there seem to be a least half a dozen threads about global warming popping up every few days. It's weird! The science is settled, but people still act as if there is a controversy.

reply

Wherever did you get the idea that the "science is settled". They've barely scratched the surface. If it was settled, they could remove all funding tomorrow ... right? ... nothing more to look at. The fact is, it's far from settled. Only an utterly ignorant moron like Al Gore would say such a thing. There's no such thing as a "settled" hypothesis ... and that's all AGW is, an hypothesis. Even well established theories are not "settled" science.

It's statements like that which indicate that this is not the place for you. You simply don't understand the first thing about science, let alone climate science, one of the most complex interdisciplinary sciences there is. It will never be settled.

reply

"Science is settled"?
You sir, should learn more. Please try to read more sources, rather than being a lemming.

How is it settled? Can you explain/summarize or just put faith in these gov groups?

You might be conflating the fact that much of media & gov (many reasons for that), and the fact that there has been supposedly some warming, with being caused by CO2 & other GHGs.

For the "some warming,": So what? Temps have varied throughout time. The ice core data show about a 22F variance, while CO2 varied 200-280 ppm. CO2 is about 388 ppm now. Do the math. Did you know that the correlation of temps & CO2 is reversed form what the causation claimed? The CO2 increase, AFTER temps did, due to ocean release.

reply

The science is settled.

reply

My mistake.
You say its settled, then it so.

You do not see ignorance in data not matching & even the lack of data?
"[Gov funded] institutions/organizations 'say so' so it must be true."
Critical, logical & reasoning skills?

What makes something settled? $Billions for AGW w/many nefarious motives & the supposed counter, of being critical, using ad hominem claims of energy money do not make sense.

Of course the science is settled. For reasons that from a scientific, analytical, observational and statistical viewpoint, the theory of global warming (falsely known as - fka for short - climate change) is well and truly sunk.

Public opinion (just remember an opinion is never wrong) has well and truly swayed against the governments of this world and the scientists on their payrolls. The greatest concern is, for want of a better term, the dreaded carbon tax. Taxing a natural phenomenon is totally unethical and unjustified. The whole thing reeks of the Beatles' song "Taxman".

I will argue against the existence of manmade influences on the climate, weather and atmospheric conditions - all which are closely interrelated, contrary to many AGWers belief.

reply

Veggiepatch,

Do please point at the "scientific, analytical, observational and statistical" data/papers etc. that support your "well and truly sunk"

You can't ... except for cherry-picking a single paper here and quoting the odd scientist there, while at the same time completely ignoring the extreme majority of the literature (scientific papers), and the extreme majority of scientists.

Public opinion is irrelevant, Political opinion just as irrelevant (except on whether we should do anything or not). Its the scientific opinion that counts. And you won't find that on blogs, in newspapers or other dodgy sources - you find that in the scientific literature.

You can argue as much as you want from your personal point of view - at the end of the day - its the science that matters. And you aren't providing any.

Ash-Boomstick,

My point was: Public opinion doesn't matter in science, the physics and chemistry stays the same - no matter what the public thinks.

The public opinion matters only in politics. And of course you are correct there.

And just a correction: "scientific law" is less than "scientific theory" - look it up. Theory and law in science has a different meaning than the colloquial one. And science is never "proven", proofs belong in the mathematical domaine, science is judged by how well it describes reality, and dismissed when another theory comes along that better describes it. Example: Newtons theory of gravity was overruled by the theory of general relativity.

True. But only a minority (or at least not a big majority) completely prefer and trust science, for many others it's still a case of belief and opinion. Especially when it comes to an issue which is also of poltical or ideological importance. I fear that we will never get rid of creationists, flat-earthers, AGW-denialists and other anti-science activists.

There are three reasons.

1. Ignorance. Not everyone has felt the need to put a little time into the subject.
2. Psychological. The problem is overwhelming and therefore difficult for some to accept.
3. Motive. Some are dependant on for example fossile fuels, agriculture or cattle and have an economical or other interest in activities that cause global warming. Or are simply old and cynical, and know it'll be their children and grandchildren's problem.

A lot more reasons for alarmists to be this silly about claiming the world is doomed.

1-There are environmentalists who genuinely believe we are doomed and see danger everywhere they look. They aren't logical, but they are honest at least. A religious belief.

2-Then there are environmentalists who are anti-human. Anything humans do is bad. (beavers build a dam and it's ok, humans build a dam and it's bad) The idea that humans could have a positive effect on the planet is out of the realm of possibility to them. They actually seem to operate under the notion that humans are aliens or something who do not belong on this planet. They really believe it so they are honest too.

3-Then there are the socialists who see anyone getting wealth as a bad thing. They don't like capitalism and see climate alarmism as a handy thing to attack with. This makes so little sense it's hard to believe anyone could be honest with this motivation. It's politics...nuff said.

4-Speaking of politics. Politicians are always on the lookout for something to scare up some votes. I say "scare" because that's their favorite method to get votes. Every politician does it. "We are doomed if we don't change what that other party is doing!" Yeah...honesty has never been a part of politics. Climate alarmism is also a great way to raise taxes. Nothing better than getting people to volunteer to give their money to the government so they can be "saved".

5-Also there are globalists who dream of a one world government where there will be peace and harmony. Honest but not logical. Giving the UN more power is always a good thing for them.

6-Next you have the media. The media knows their audience. People are not interested in positive news. Negative news sells. "If it bleeds, it leads". The world is in peril? What could be better than that? So if a politician makes that claim, they aren't going to resist that one. Maybe not work too hard to see if the claim has merit? Same thing when they report a new "plague" every other year or so that is killing far less people than the common flu.

7-But being in the media usually means you pursued a career in the media. For whatever reason, those with a left leaning mindset tend to pursue a career in the media. Being surrounded by people who agree with your politics tends to make you think that is "the middle". So if a liberal makes a claim, it certainly sounds "correct". Why would you make extra effort to investigate that claim to see if it is accurate? The President said "storms are getting worse"....he wouldn't lie about that, right? Why would you spend 5 minutes looking it up to see if that is true?

8-Others who work for the government depend upon the climate scare to get funding. So why would you put any effort into research that would prove you need less funding? They aren't honest, but they are normal like the rest of us. I probably wouldn't do that either.

"1. Ignorance. Not everyone has felt the need to put a little time into the subject."

A lot of people just fail to notice/don't feel that it's affecting them. They think if it's raining or snowing where they live, then "global warming" isn't happening.

"2. Psychological. The problem is overwhelming and therefore difficult for some to accept."

Clive Hamilton talked a bit about this in his excellent book Requiem For A Species: Why We Resist the Truth About Climate Change. Hamilton pointed out that a person's political views can play a part. Alluding to the survey "Six Americas", people who vote Republican are more likely to be climate change deniers. (So in their eyes the science of climate change is liberal left-wing hogwash.)

"3. Motive. Some are dependant on for example fossile fuels, agriculture or cattle and have an economical or other interest in activities that cause global warming. Or are simply old and cynical, and know it'll be their children and grandchildren's problem."

In his book Storms of My Grandchildren James Hansen mentioned meeting Larry King:

Over the past few years I thought about our grandchildren and the intergenerational inequity of human-made climate change. Larry King's comment that "nobody cares about fifty years from now" didn't seem right - people do care about their children and grandchildren. In fact, the concept of responsibility to future generations is as familiar to Americans as their Constitution, with its phrase "to ourselves and our Posterity" embedded in the preamble. I believed then, and believe now, that if the public had a better understanding of the climate crisis, they would do what needed to be done.
Hansen still think there's hope.

Sounds like you're an alarmist -- at least an enabler. In other words, pushing an unsound gospel.

Science? Data?

Look at data.

CO2 is a minor GHG & has its most affect below 250 ppm. Less than that, plants starve.

CO2 is now at 400 ppm. No significant dif in temp or climate for 20 years or a century. or millenia. (The MWP was warmer than now).

CO2 was much higher in the past, but no higher temps correlated.
