Are we supposed to hate her or not?

I understand Delpy was going for a "complicated" character not wholly black and white whose story she wanted to tell. But one moment she is presenting her as cold and condescending and downright mean and petty, bludgeoning her poor chamber maid with a wooden brush and whipping little old ladies who dare talk back to her then the next she is presenting her as a helpless heartbroken victim of conniving manipulation by others with an agenda and suffering from potential mental instability when all she wanted was to be truly loved by someone. But its presented in a kind of helter skelter delivery. There doesnt feel like theres any transition between one side of her and the other. And at the end I was stuck feeling like 'serves you right' and 'poor pitiful countess'...
