How did Caine know who he saved?

We know from the journal that he wrote down the names and dates of the people he saved. Forget about the others, I'm more interested in how he knew the names of Abe Dale's wife and kid? In the video we see he saves them and walks away, looking back only once. He never stops and talks with them.

So how did he know their names so he could put it in his ledger?

My only guess is that when he glanced back he saw their license plate, memorized the number, and then when he was further away from them wrote it down on paper.

Judging by the home I had the impression that he was a very wealthy man, or had access to money and maybe this gave him privilege and resources that allowed him to get that information. I could only imagine that he must have considerable resources to be able to violate privacy laws like that. Maybe he works for the government, lol.

That's all I got. Anyone have a better idea?
