In the book it ends with Harding's deep peression. Then a couple of months go by and Sarah asks him to visit her at her school where she teaches. SHe treis t oexplain to him that she's just a normal person and not so special as Harding alwasy thought she was. They end up having a good conversatin and then he leaves content with moving on in his life.

In the film version you actually get a scene where Harding goes to Texas to visit his father. Later Harding gets an invite to see Sarah rehearse. They talk beforehand and then she goes to practice a song that's meaningful to their relationship. During the song Harding leaves. He gets into the same car his father always drove and drives off. In the back seat are his father and mother when they were younger.

Q: Temper, temper, Captain.
Captain Picard: Get off my ship.

What I got from the ending of both book and movie was that by the time she decided to give the guy another chance he'd worked his way through to the other side and no longer wanted one. In the book she was so nervous about seeing him again that she broke out in hives.
