what a near-perfect--and prophetic--piece of work

Interested to see so many other people rating this series so highly. Every time an episode is on, if I watch 30 seconds, I'm done for the duration. Like a book you absolutely can't put down.

Gotta say, too, when you see all that stuff about British occupation, the show of military presence, "losses" that are actually Continental wins (I can just hear the British war apologists publishing articles about how "we've never actually lost a single battle")...kinda hard not to see the parallels to our current situation. You'd think if any country would understand the impossibility of even a superior army maintaining military control over an occupied country that doesn't want them there, it'd be us.

Anyway...this series really brings up a lot of memories of when I was a grade-school kid, learning about this country and absolutely falling in love with it--I mean just an intense, deep love that doesn't depend on symbology, but that comes out of the real actions of real people, for their liberalism and radicalism, their all-in commitment to anti-authoritarianism and anti-monarchism. I fell in love with it all over again, watching this series, and I wonder where the promise of that nation went, for us to be where we are now. I wonder if the filmmakers know they're having this effect on people.

This country went straight to the crapper thanks to liberals like you.

Conservatives, Neocons, & Republicans have been running this country for nearly thirty years. Can you say "Cause and effect"?

Didn't think so.

reply

In what time warp did you descend? If you think Conservatives have been running this country for the past 30 years, you are mistaken. Reagan was certainly a refreshing change from the political malaise and economic mess left by James E. Carter Jr. However, both of the Bushes were "moderates" at best; Clinton was certainly no conservative and if you think Obama is one, then you certainly need help! This nation is on the brink of total disaster thanks to The Liberal Establishment!!!

You know what they called Conservatives in the 1770s? LOYALISTS! You know, the ones who wanted to keep the status quo according to their bed-rock values. That's right, the Conservatives of that era were just a bunch of Lick-Spittle Lobster-back loving Loyalist LOSERS!!!! Do you know what they called the Liberals back in the 1770s? You know, the ones who were all full of hope and all fired up to change the world to the point of risking their lives and fortunes? That's right, PATRIOTS!
Suck on that awhile, Tea-Bagger.

So, SO true. It makes me sick when I hear all this crap about the "tea party" today, as if there actually were one. (There's not; it's just an imaginary appellation given to the usual hordes of anti-government ignoramuses, plus a few sincere people who actually want to make government more efficient. If somebody committed misconduct at a "tea-party" event, to whom would one go to complain? Who's the spokesperson, other than a gaggle of people shoved to the front by the corporate front groups that are buried beneath layers of fun little patriotic names and who shovel money to the "party"? And so forth.)

Anyhow, the real tea partiers of the Boston Tea Party were diametrically opposed to these numskulls. They were anything but anti-intellectual. They were not opposed to government; in fact, they were opposed to NOT receiving the kind of benefits a good government could give them, despite being taxed. They were opposed to redistributing income up to the rich (in their case, the king). They weren't even anti-taxation. One way you know this is that once the Revolution was won, they instituted...what? A national government. And taxation. This 21st-century "tea party" is nothing but a sham version that stands for everything the originals were against, and vice versa.

What a fun world you must live in.

By the standards of the rest of the world, our presidencies have been center-right to far-right for at least 40 years or more. Whether you choose to recognize that or not is your own obscurantist right.

As for Carter, he's the guy who had alternative-energy programs in place before Reagan dismantled them.

As for Reagan, his ridiculous economic policies, espoused completely by Republicans and partially by Democrats (most of who became corporate after starting to take corporate money in '79-'80 to compete with Republicans), are exactly what put us into this ditch economically. Feel free to delude yourself to the contrary all you want.

As for Obama, go back and look at his SOTU speech; virtually every line could've come out of Reagan's mouth. From interventionist military and foreign policy to a further entrenchment of the for-profit corporate healthcare system, Obama is not even close to liberal. Not by a million miles.

Seriously, you don't want to get into this discussion. Actually, _I_ don't want to, because I do this sort of thing every day for national media contacts. It's probably better that you stay with your Fox News circle and simply confirm each others' myths.

Well, you're certainly into addressing the substance, aren't you? I'll take this to mean you don't actually have an argument; you only have ideology, loyalty, and name-calling. Big deal. Makes you less than a dime a dozen.

Your point is well taken. What a lot of silly comments your post got.

reply

Why, thanks...appreciate it. I was just responding to someone over on youtube about the fact that soemtimes I get email notices of responses on comment lists there, and sometimes I don't. Same thing here, same thing on Facebook. Have no idea why. But I certainly would've responded to some of these if I'd seen them. Now that I got a notice on _your_ response, I think I'll try to get back to some of these older comments when I get time. Thanks for the heads-up...
