Ghost

Can someone please tell me how did
Ton know that his friend was a ghost? I didn't understand that part.

the ghost they saw in that outdoor film is a chinese vampire.
chinese vampires can only "see" through sensing the human breath, and it's common legend for you to stop breathing when they approach you so they can't detect your presence.

so when the film showed the characers holding their breath, all the boys watching it followed suit (if you remember)...including ton. remember when the chinese vampire in the film projection couldn't see the funny human characters right when they held their fingers up to their noses? this is what happened to vichien when all the boys held their fingers up to their nostrils. so he stood up, baffled at the fact that everyone sitting around him, including ton, suddenly vanished.

ton saw vichien stand up and look around in this blind daze. then when ton started breathing again vichien immediately saw him, sat down and asked where he went. this is when ton realized that just like the vampire in the film, the lively boy that's quickly becoming his new best friend sitting next to him is not quite...alive.

Wow! Thanks so much. I've always wondered about that and never could figure it out. I do appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me. Thanks again!

Yeah, thanks! I totally missed that. I was so caught up in the emotions of the movie I didn't notice. That poor lonely kid, I just wanted to give him a big hug (Ton--but Vichien too, now that I think of it). Also I'd heard about those 'hopping ghost/vampire' movies for over a decade but never seen them, so I was all caught up with that, and missing the giant hint you pointed out.

Since the film was (mostly) seen through Ton's POV, I just figured he was clued in slowly the way we were. I rented it, but ending up liking it so much I picked up a (used) copy when I found one later. I loved (among many other things) the scene when he first hooks up with his 'gang' and they tell ghost stories under the sheets. I think it was under a sheet, I jumped when they cut to the one female ghost, hanging... anyone who was a big fan of this movie should check out the Thai horror anthology Phobia 2. Different tone, and definitely more gruesome (though it's not just stuck in as gore for the sake of gore, like many US movies) but he did a really scary--and clever-- couple of segments. If you're worried it might be too scary, watch the trailer on YouTube and you'll know!
